Shanghai People’s Square is centrally located in Shanghai, marking the division between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a vibrant area for exploration.
Before 1949, the site of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861 and celebrated as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of People’s Square.
The tour will include many scenic spots around People’s Square, such as the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. The group will then visit the Shanghai Museum. -
Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) - Situated in the heart of Shanghai at People’s Square, the Shanghai Museum is a large institution dedicated to ancient Chinese art. Its design and presentation immerse visitors in artifacts that reflect ancient wisdom and philosophy. The museum’s exterior, with its round dome and square base, symbolizes the ancient concept of a round heaven and a square earth.
The museum features eleven galleries and three exhibition halls. These galleries cover major categories of Chinese art, including Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics, Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities.
The group will then stroll around Yuyuan Old Street, experiencing the authentic Shanghai lifestyle and visiting a classical garden and Chinese pharmacy.
-
Yuyuan Old Street - Historically known as Miaoqian Dajie, Shanghai Old Street is a historic business street that combines tourist attractions, shops, entertainment, and cultural exhibits. Its unique social appeal and rich commercial history stem from being home to the city’s earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler’s store, wine shop, and tea house. Exploring the old alleys of Shanghai offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the city’s traditional culture and experience the genuine life of the Shanghainese.
The group will walk along Yuyuan Old Street, enjoy a tea ceremony in an old teahouse, and then visit a classical garden. -
Yu Garden (Yuyuan) - Yu Garden was a private garden of the Pan family during the Ming Dynasty. Upon completion, it was the largest and most prestigious garden of its time in Shanghai.
Though small, Yu Garden encompasses all the elements of a classical Chinese garden. The pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds, and cloisters each have distinct characteristics. The garden’s exquisite layout, beautiful scenery, and artistic architectural style make it a highlight of Shanghai.
Visitors can walk across the Zigzag Nine Bend Bridge, as the number nine is considered auspicious in Chinese culture. Crossing the bridge is believed to bring good luck. The bridge leads to the Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse, the oldest teahouse in Shanghai. -
Pudong New Area - As a dynamic and bustling district, Pudong offers visitors modern attractions, businesses, skyscrapers, and shopping malls, all showcasing the latest in entertainment, technology, and fashion.
The group will walk along the Lujiazui Ring Bridge, an excellent spot for photographing skyscrapers. -
Oriental Pearl Tower (Dongfang Mingzhu) - Once the tallest building in Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl Tower remains one of the most iconic skyscrapers in Pudong, forming part of the skyline visible from The Bund. The futuristic 1,535-foot (468-meter) tower features observation platforms, a glass-bottomed walkway, a rotating restaurant, and the Shanghai History Museum in its basement.
The Oriental Pearl Tower’s facade is a must-see during a visit to Shanghai. The group will enter the Oriental Pearl Tower, explore Shanghai’s history in the Municipal History Museum located in the tower’s base, take an elevator to the glass-bottomed sightseeing floor, and enjoy the views from the observation decks. -
Shanghai Development Exhibition Hall - The Shanghai History Museum is located on the ground level. It houses thousands of historical relics, over 100 wax figures, and scaled-down exquisite architectures.
Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the 700-year history of the city at the Shanghai History Museum inside the Oriental Pearl Tower.
The tour will then proceed to admire the western-style architecture around the Former French Concession area.
-
Sinan Mansions - A Delightful Leisure and Entertainment Spot
Sinan Road is a renowned French-style street in the Former French Concession of Shanghai. Approximately twenty garden houses line both sides of the street, representing nearly all residential styles of early 20th-century Shanghai. The area features boutique hotels, apartment hotels, and enterprise mansions. Additionally, there are various restaurants, bars, coffee houses, tea houses, as well as numerous clubs, convention centers, showrooms, cultural salons, designer shops, and recreational parks. Strolling down this clean and romantic one-way street, visitors can enjoy the shade of the plane trees lining the road and experience tranquility amidst bustling Shanghai. -
Xintiandi - Xintiandi is a tourist destination that preserves the historical and cultural essence of Shanghai while blending Chinese and Western cultures. Xintiandi is divided into northern and southern sections. The south is characterized by modern architecture, while the north features Shikumen old buildings. Combining Shikumen and modern architectural styles, it has become a trendy and fashionable pedestrian street in the city center.
