Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, travelers proceed to the Itabaca Channel to board a ferry to Santa Cruz Island. A 30-minute bus journey leads to a restaurant in the intriguing, lush Highlands of the island for lunch, followed by a drive south to Puerto Ayora on the coast.
Puerto Ayora - Puerto Ayora and the Charles Darwin Research Station
In the eastern part of Puerto Ayora, the largest town in the archipelago, visitors explore the Charles Darwin Research Station and the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, the hub for scientific research and conservation on the islands. Later in the afternoon, a leisurely walk along the main street of Puerto Ayora precedes embarking. Enjoy a Captain’s welcome cocktail and dinner.
Bartolome & Santiago Islands
Bartolome - This morning, a Galapagos icon awaits: Bartolome Island. Begin the day with a steep climb up a wooden staircase; the panoramic view from the summit is truly rewarding!
Sullivan Bay - After the walk, a panga ride around the massive Pinnacle Rock offers a chance to spot Galapagos penguins and other wildlife.
Santa Cruz & Santiago Islands
Dragon Hill (Cerro Dragon) - The north coast of Santa Cruz features the captivating landscapes of Dragon Hill. After disembarking, the initial part of the walk passes a brackish-water lagoon frequented by shorebirds, ducks, and American flamingos. Further inland, the trail provides a stunning view of the bay and the western islands of the archipelago, along with the opportunity to observe land iguanas (named after a dedicated conservation effort by the Galapagos National Park). After the walk, snorkeling from the shore offers the chance to see rays, green turtles, and sharks.
Santiago Island - Buccaneer Cove
Post-lunch, the exploration of the coastline along the dramatic cliffs of Buccaneer Cove begins, delving into the area’s distant and recent history. The cove hosts numerous marine birds, sea lions, and inter-tidal organisms. Marvel at natural formations like “Elephant Rock”, “The Bishop”, and an impressive natural cave. Opportunities for snorkeling, and rides on the panga or glass-bottom boat are available.
Isabela & Fernandina Islands
Isabela Island - Punta Vicente Roca
With no landing site available, the enchanting coast is explored by dinghy, seeking out diverse wildlife including colonies of Galapagos fur seals, nesting sites of Nazca boobies, as well as flightless cormorants, penguins, and marine iguanas. Depending on ocean conditions, snorkeling along the cliffs may be possible, hopefully alongside green sea turtles. Back on board, navigation continues along the Bolivar Channel, where nutrient-rich upwellings create fertile fishing grounds for cetaceans.
