- Bacalhoa Palace and Estate - Known as the most exquisite Quinta from the first half of the 15th century still standing in Portugal, Quinta da Bacalhôa was once a property of the Portuguese Royal House.
In the 14th century, it served as a leisure farm for John, Infante de Portugal, son of King D. João I. It was inherited by his daughter Dona Brites, who was married to the second Duke of Viseu and mother of King D. Manuel I.
In 1528, the estate was sold to D. Brás de Albuquerque, the eldest son of D. Afonso de Albuquerque. The estate features a notable collection of Portuguese tiles from the 16th century, showcasing Moorish designs and depicting a house on the lake overlooking the Quinta. Visitors can admire unique collectible pieces, including the first dated tile in Portugal, as well as beautiful gardens and vineyards.
- Parque Natural da Arrabida - The Arrábida Natural Park offers breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean and Setubal Bay, which is part of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. This biogenetic reserve is located on the Setúbal peninsula, reaching an altitude of 501 meters.
The park’s diverse fauna and flora have evolved significantly since the 19th century. Until the early 20th century, wolves and deer could still be seen. The park protects rare flora species, including unique orchids and wild tulips like the one-of-a-kind Candidula arrabidensis.
Arrábida Natural Park is a magical and special place, home to unique flora and fauna species.
Approximately 1,400 plant species are found in this area, representing 40% of Portugal’s flora in less than 1% of the country’s plant area.
- Forte de Sao Filipe - The Castle of São Filipe, also known as São Filipe Fort, is a fortification located in the city of Setúbal.
Setúbal has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with successive occupations by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans.
As a strategic Atlantic port, the first defensive structure of this important town was a wall initiated during the reign of King D. Afonso IV (1325-57) and completed under D. Pedro I (1356-67), designed to repel pirate and corsair attacks, often from North Africa.
During the Philippine dynasty, its significance was highlighted when King D. Philip I (1580-1598) personally attended the laying of the foundation stone for the new fortification in 1582, alongside Italian military architect and engineer Filippo Terzi (1520-1597).
In the 18th century, the chapel within the fort acquired its tile coat, signed by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes (1736). During the Pombaline consulate (1750-1777), it was affected by the 1755 earthquake and later served as the School of Gunners.
- Mercado do Livramento - Opened in 1930, the Fish Market of Setubal is now ranked among the top 10 fish markets in the world.
Visitors are pleasantly surprised by the market’s cleanliness, with no fishy smell, mosquitoes, or flies, as all food is exceptionally fresh.
A visit here is undoubtedly fascinating.
- Castelo de Palmela - The castle stands 240 meters above sea level.
With Islamic occupation from the 8th to the 12th centuries, the Castle of Palmela was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 and permanently reclaimed by D. Sancho I.
Within the castle walls are the convent of the Order of Santiago, the Church of Santiago, and the ruins of the Church of St. Mary.
This castle offers a privileged view over Setubal and Lisbon.
