Into the Heart of the Danakil Depression

As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the Danakil Depression had long been on my radar. Known for its otherworldly landscapes and the iconic Erta Ale volcano, this region of Ethiopia promised an experience unlike any other. My journey began in Semera, where I was greeted by the warm hospitality of the Afar people. The anticipation was palpable as we set off on our expedition, eager to witness the breathtaking sulfur springs and the mesmerizing lava lake.

Our first stop was the salt mines of Ragad, where local workers toiled under the blazing sun, extracting salt from the earth. It was a humbling sight, watching the workers cut the salt into rectangular pieces and load them onto camels. The landscape was a kaleidoscope of colors, with the vibrant hues of the salt flats contrasting against the stark desert backdrop. As we continued our journey, we encountered the famous camel caravans, a testament to the enduring traditions of the Afar people.

The Allure of Erta Ale

The journey to Erta Ale was not for the faint of heart. The road was rough, and the heat was intense, but the promise of witnessing one of the world’s only permanent lava lakes kept our spirits high.
