Semera - Begin the journey with a pick-up from the hotel or airport in Semera at 8 am. Travel through the scenic Lake Afdera, known for its salt lake, and enjoy the stunning landscape. Arrive in Dalol by the afternoon and explore Lake Asebo, where salt mining takes place. Witness the process of extracting salt from the ground, cutting it into rectangular pieces, and loading it onto camels. Continue the drive to Dallol (-130 m) to see the unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity, including Dallol and Lake Assal (-130 m), along with camel caravans (note: no camel caravans in July, August, and early September). Take an excursion to Dallol, one of the world’s lowest points at 116 meters below sea level, to see colorful salt mining, visit Lake Assal, follow camel caravans, and walk with the Afar people. Enjoy the sunset over the vibrant landscape. Return to Hamedela for overnight camping – Dalol.
Hamedella - Earta’le
Day 07 Jun 25 Earta’le – Semera
Erta Ale - Rise early to witness two of Earth’s wonders: the sunrise and magma. In the morning, trek back to Askoma for breakfast, then spend some time at the campsite before driving back to Semera. On the way, visit Lake Afdera, which is typically visible during the Ethiopian rainy season, though there might be a chance to see it in the summer. This mythical saltwater lake is located over 100 meters below sea level in one of the planet’s deepest depressions. The picturesque landscape makes it worthwhile to visit the salt flats, where the Afar people harvest salt by evaporating the lake’s water.
