- Ancient City of Ephesus - The Ancient City of Ephesus, renowned for its symbols that illuminate the advanced urbanization, architecture, and religious history of the Hellenistic and Roman eras, showcases the most significant architectural and urban planning examples from various periods. Entirely constructed from marble, this ancient city is striking with its architectural marvels. Visitors can witness one of the world’s most magnificent excavations, featuring numerous historical artifacts such as The Odeon, The Fountain of Trajan, The Terraces of Apartment Houses, The Stream Baths of Scholastika, The Temple of Hadrian, and the impressive Celsus Library adorned with columns and statues. Not to be missed is The Magnificent Grand Theater, where Saint Paul preached, and which stands as the largest theater of antiquity with a seating capacity of 24,000.
- Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - The House of Virgin Mary, deemed holy by the Vatican, is a place where both Muslims and Christians from around the globe come to pray and make offerings as part of their pilgrimage. This sacred site for Christians worldwide welcomes believers of all faiths, and tourists alike. Olive trees lining the path to the Virgin Mary’s House were planted by Lazarist monks in 1898. A statue of Mary, gifted by a religious community in Izmir and dated 1867, stands at the end of the olive-lined road. The visit concludes with three fountains, accessible by descending the stairs to the right after leaving the church. Visitors often drink the water from these fountains, believed to be healing, and take it with them.
- The Temple of Artemis - The Temple of Artemis, a religious edifice where the Ephesians expressed their devotion to the goddess, also served as a marketplace and gathering spot. Although only its foundational ruins and a marble column remain, it is a must-see in Selcuk. The Temple of Artemis, part of the Temenos religious section, resembled a small city with public buildings and residences. Situated away from the sea and surrounded by fertile land, the temple also functioned as a commercial hub and a bank due to its security. The magnificence of the Temple of Artemis is captured in the words of Macedonian General Antipatros, “When I saw the house of Artemis built on clouds, all other wonders lost their shine and I said, ‘Here! Except for Olympus, the sun has never looked at such a big thing.’”
- Isa Bey Mosque - Isa Bey Mosque is one of the oldest and most remarkable works of the Anatolian Principalities. Located where Selcuk Ephesus was first established, Isa Bey Mosque is among the earliest examples of mosques with two minarets, porticoes, and courtyards with fountains in Anatolia. Despite falling into ruin by the late 19th century and being overgrown with grass up to its domes, the mosque’s roof was repaired in 1975 and the altar in 1990. Following restoration by the foundations, it was reopened for worship. Although the mosque has lost some of its original character, it remains magnificent and impressive.
