- Ephesus Terrace Houses - Following this, the guide will lead an exploration of the Terrace Houses, known as “the houses of the rich,” and there will be time to visit St. John’s Basilica. The terraced houses of Ephesus, adorned with beautiful frescoes from the 2nd century CE, stretch up the hill. They once accommodated the affluent families of the town, who proudly maintained frescoes and mosaics inside. The decor and furnishings of the houses offer fascinating insights into the lifestyles of Ephesian elites during the Roman and early Byzantine periods. These houses are often compared to similar structures, particularly the villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, found in parts of the Roman Empire. The consensus is that the Ephesian houses are equally impressive. Remarkable!
- The Basilica of Saint John - Now, it’s time to gain insight into the history of this ancient site, constructed in the sixth century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. It is believed that the church is built on the burial grounds of John the Apostle and was designed in the shape of a cross. At its completion, it was covered by six domes, with many walls likely once adorned with frescoes. The basilica was converted into a mosque, struck by an earthquake, and completely destroyed by a Mongolian army in 1402, as nearby Ephesus began to decline in importance. Today, only various bricks and stones remain alongside the marble columns that once supported the structure, but recent restoration offers context for visualizing and understanding its former significance and meaning.
