Thingvellir National Park - Þingvellir National Park
Þingvellir holds great significance for Icelanders as it is the site where Alþingi, the world’s oldest Parliament, was established in 930. It is also one of the rare locations in Iceland and globally where the mid-Atlantic ridge is visible above ground.
Stroll through the Almannagjá tectonic rift, visit the site of the first parliament, Althing, and enjoy the stunning Öxaráfoss waterfall. Take in the breathtaking scenery, explore filming locations from Game of Thrones, visit Iceland’s largest lake, Þingvallavatn, and even dive between continents in the Silfra River.
In 2004, Þingvellir was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural, historical, scientific, and other significant values.
- Geysir - The Geysir geothermal area is known for its bubbling hot water and erupting geysers. The term “geyser” originates from the now mostly inactive Geysir, after which the site is named. Geysir used to shoot boiling water up to 70 m (230 ft) into the air, but it has been dormant for years following a series of earthquakes.
Instead, visitors can witness its sibling, Strokkur, erupting every few minutes. Although not as large as Geysir, Strokkur’s eruptions can reach up to 30 m (98 ft).
- Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most renowned and breathtaking waterfalls. While not the largest, it is a three-tiered waterfall that plunges into a 64-meter-deep canyon. Due to the canyon’s curve at the point of descent and the waterfall’s spray, the bottom is often obscured, creating the illusion of an abyss.
In the early 20th century, there were plans to harness the waterfall’s power for electricity. The landowner’s daughter, Sólveig Tómasdóttir, a pioneering environmentalist, strongly opposed this and threatened to throw herself into the waterfall if the plans proceeded. Her father heeded her warning, and her efforts are greatly appreciated today.
- Kerid Crater - This optional stop features a stunning crater lake in the Grímsnes area, south of Gullfoss and Geysir. It measures about 55 m (180 ft) deep, 170 m (560 ft) wide, and 270 m (890 ft) across. The area is known as Iceland’s Western Volcanic Zone, and the sand around the crater is red due to its high iron content, contrasting beautifully with the blue lake water.

Fridheimar - Another optional stop!
Experience dining in a greenhouse at Friðheimar Greenhouse restaurant, surrounded by growing tomatoes. Enjoy tomato soup, freshly baked bread, and other delights in a charming plant-filled setting.
Tomatoes are cultivated year-round, even during Iceland’s long, dark winters, using artificial lighting in greenhouses. Visitors can savor the farm’s produce, and many agree that the tomato soup here is unparalleled!
The farm produces approximately 370 tonnes of vegetables annually, primarily tomatoes and cucumbers.
- Secret Lagoon - Gamla Laugin - Yet another optional stop
The Secret Lagoon, or Gamla laugin (the Old Pool), is Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, built in 1891 at Hverahólmur, a geothermal area near Flúðir.
The site is unique due to its abundant natural warm water from hot springs. Vaðmálahver, Básahver, and Litli Geysir (an active geyser that erupts every few minutes) supply 100% of the lagoon’s water.
The pool’s water is continuously refreshed, taking only 24 hours for a complete turnover. Warm, clean, and rich in sulfur, it maintains a temperature of 38-40 degrees Celsius year-round.
Centuries ago, the hot springs of Hverahólmur were used for washing clothes and bathing. The Old Pool was a swimming instruction site from 1909 to 1947. The Secret Lagoon remains natural, simple, and unique, offering an authentic Icelandic experience.
- Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths - Located in the heart of Iceland’s popular Golden Circle tourist route, Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths offer a unique experience of the healing powers of geothermal springs. Relax in a natural pool, listen to the bubbling hot spring in the steam rooms, or take a refreshing dip in the lake for the adventurous.
Visitors can also learn how to make the distinctive Icelandic Rye bread.
