Seattle’s Skyline: A Journey Through Time at Smith Tower

As a former city planner turned travel writer, I couldn’t resist the allure of Seattle’s iconic Smith Tower. Join me as I explore its rich history, breathtaking views, and the unique experience it offers.

A Journey Through Time: The Smith Tower Experience

Seattle, a city that never ceases to amaze me with its blend of history and modernity, has always been a favorite destination of mine. As a former city planner turned travel writer, I find myself drawn to places that tell a story, and the Smith Tower is one such place. This iconic building, once the tallest west of the Mississippi, offers a unique glimpse into the past while providing breathtaking views of the present.

Upon entering the Smith Tower, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of its architecture. The brass and marble interiors, coupled with the antique appointments, transported me back to a time when craftsmanship was paramount. The historic Otis elevators, a marvel in their own right, whisked me up to the 35th floor observatory. As I ascended, I couldn’t help but imagine the countless stories these walls could tell, stories of a bygone era when the tower stood as a beacon of progress and innovation.

The View from the Top: A 360-Degree Panorama

Reaching the top, I was greeted by a sight that took my breath away. The open-air observation deck offered a 360-degree view of Seattle and beyond, a visual feast that captured the city’s vibrant energy and stunning natural beauty. From the bustling streets below to the majestic mountains in the distance, every angle provided a new perspective, a new story waiting to be told.

As I stood there, taking in the sights, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. This was more than just a view; it was an experience, a moment in time that connected the past with the present. The observatory, with its speakeasy-inspired bar, added to the ambiance, offering a taste of the Prohibition era with its craft cocktails and shareable plates.

A Taste of the Past: Dining at the Smith Tower

After soaking in the views, I made my way to the bar to indulge in some of the offerings. The happy hour promotion was a pleasant surprise, with $12 tickets and $9 select small plates and drinks. I opted for a couple of cocktails and the Pork Char Sui plate. While the drinks were refreshing, the food left much to be desired. The Chinese-style sliced barbecued pork was ordinary, and the Chili Prawns, though perfectly cooked, were overwhelmed by an overly sweet sauce.

Despite the culinary shortcomings, the service was impeccable, a testament to the staff’s dedication to providing a memorable experience. The atmosphere, however, was a bit marred by the noise from a private party, a reminder that even in a place steeped in history, the present can sometimes intrude.

In conclusion, the Smith Tower is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore Seattle’s rich history and enjoy unparalleled views of the city. While the food may not be the highlight, the experience of standing atop this historic building, surrounded by the sights and sounds of Seattle, is one that will stay with you long after you’ve left. Next time, I might skip the meal, but I’ll definitely return for the view and the chance to make a wish in the Wishing Chair. Smith Tower Experience
