Since its construction over two centuries ago, Pedro St. James has served various purposes, including as a cotton plantation, courthouse, jail, Government Assembly, and restaurant. In 1996, the Cayman Islands government acquired the property and restored it to its 18th-century splendor.
Today, it is a vibrant symbol of Caymanian heritage. Known as the “birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James hosted a pivotal meeting on December 5, 1831, where the decision to establish the islands’ first elected parliament was made. Furthermore, on May 3, 1835, the proclamation abolishing slavery in the British Empire was announced from this site.
