- Hoheikyo Onsen - (10:00) Arrival at Hoheikyo Onsen
Once equipped with a mountain bike, helmet, and gloves, you’ll receive safety instructions and basic riding guidance. Follow your guide on a gentle 1.5-hour ride along a mostly paved road, beginning at the upper Toyohira River, where mountain snowmelt swells the waters into the Jozankei valley. Enjoy views above the river canyon and cross a suspension bridge, heading towards Jozankei. Experience a steep, downhill ride to this traditional onsen town, established in 1866 when an ascetic monk discovered its healing waters and opened the spa.
Amidst the forested banks along the abundant Toyohira River, observe steam rising from all directions. Pause to savor snacks like onsen manju, a bun filled with azuki-bean paste, before departing via a steep uphill route.
- Hoheikyo Onsen - (11:40) Return to Hoheikyo Onsen, enjoy a curry lunch and onsen
Your 6-mile (10-km) journey concludes at this natural hot spring, recognized as one of the best hot spring day trips by TripAdvisor. Relax in mineral baths indoors or choose from three large outdoor pools, where you can enjoy panoramic mountain views during a 1-hour soak. Hoheikyo is one of Japan’s few onsen facilities using 100-percent pure waters; the pools are continuously fed by hot springs flowing directly into the baths from the ground. Afterward, satisfy your hunger with a lunch of authentic naan bread and Indian curry — Jozankei’s most popular dish — at the onsite restaurant.
- Sapporo - (14:40) Arrival in Sapporo
