Soranuma-dake, reaching 1,251 meters, is a day hike near Sapporo that offers breathtaking views and a peaceful retreat into nature. The trailhead starts at a quarry and winds through lush forests to two rustic huts by a tranquil pond, ideal for a break. The ascent, which takes about four hours, rewards hikers with stunning views of Sapporo city, Lake Shikotsu, and the surrounding mountains. Covering a total distance of 17.5 kilometers and rated as moderately difficult, this hike is best undertaken from May to late November, when the trail is mostly free of snow.
For a more demanding day hike, consider Jozankei Tengu dake. This ancient volcano, standing at 1,145 meters, features a series of rugged summits surrounded by cliffs, providing a challenging experience for hikers. The ascent begins with a walk along a river, followed by a steep climb assisted by ropes, leading to a narrow ridge with breathtaking views. The optimal time to visit is from May to late November, when the trail is most accessible.
