Santo Domingo, the first city of the Americas, invites you to wander through its ancient pathways and discover the origins of the New World. Explore the oldest colonial city, established in the 15th century.
- Calle Las Damas - At the eastern end of Calle El Conde, you’ll find the first paved street in the Americas: Calle Las Damas, or the “street of the ladies.” This charming, narrow road is lined with 16th-century architecture, former colonial buildings now transformed into museums, embassies, and upscale hotels. It connects directly to the Alcazar de Colón Palace, where María de Toledo and her ladies would stroll in the evenings. Key landmarks along this historic street include Fortaleza Ozama, the first fortress in the Americas, and the National Pantheon, the resting place of the Dominican Republic’s national heroes.
- Parque Colon - This lively park in the Dominican Republic faces the oldest cathedral in the Americas, set in a lush, shaded square surrounded by colonial, republican, and modern architecture. A popular spot for both Dominicans and tourists, its centerpiece is a towering statue of Christopher Columbus pointing to the island he discovered, with Taino Indian heroine Anacaona gazing up at him. Pigeons flutter around this enchanting square, which is filled with benches, merengue music, sidewalk cafés, and ample opportunities for people-watching.
- Alcazar de Colon - Among the most visited museums in the Colonial City, this architectural marvel was completed around 1512. The Gothic and Renaissance-style palace was once home to Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus, and his wife María de Toledo, niece of King Ferdinand of Spain. Overlooking Plaza de España on one side and the Ozama River on the other, it is the oldest vice-regal residence in the Americas and the first fortified palace, now a museum showcasing 16th-century furniture, art, musical instruments, and weapons. Winding staircases lead to the couple’s well-preserved bedrooms and the grand crystal chandelier-lit reception hall where events were held for the Spanish aristocracy.
- Panteon Nacional - This 18th-century Jesuit church serves as the final resting place for many of the Dominican Republic’s most esteemed heroes.
