- Parque Colón - The journey begins at Parque Colón, the heart of the Colonial City, serving as a central hub for recreation. This area is rich with significant landmarks, including the Catedral Primada de América, the first City Hall of Santo Domingo, the charming Calle El Conde, renowned restaurants, shops, and numerous other attractions. At the center of the park stands a statue of Christopher Columbus, crafted in 1887 by the skilled French sculptor Ernesto Gilbert.
- Catedral Primada de América de Santo Domingo - This cathedral and minor basilica, located in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is dedicated to Saint Mary of the Incarnation, also known as the Annunciation. Officially named the Holy Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral Church of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Incarnation or Annunciation, it is situated at the intersection of Arzobispo Meriño and Isabela La Católica streets, near Parque Colón, with its main entrance facing west towards Arzobispo Meriño street, close to the corner with Arzobispo Nouel.
This cathedral in Santo Domingo holds the distinction of being the oldest in America, with construction starting in 1512 by order of Pope Julius II. It also serves as the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo and stands as a significant historical landmark in the region.
- Panteón Nacional - The National Pantheon is a mausoleum dedicated to preserving the remains of notable figures in Dominican Republic history. It contains around 36 empty spaces reserved for future national heroes. Additionally, there is a space without a specific plaque honoring the unknown soldier.
In the National Pantheon, a permanent honor guard, composed of members of the presidential guard in ceremonial attire, stands motionless. One member conducts a ceremonial walk along the central aisle from the main entrance to the main altar.
Alongside the Dominican flag, the flags of the Air Force, Navy, and Army of the Dominican Republic are displayed here, symbolizing respect and recognition for the country’s armed forces.
- Museo De Las Casas Reales - The Museum of the Royal Houses, formerly known as the Royal Palaces during the Captaincy General and provincial era, is housed in two 16th-century palaces. It was constructed by order of the Crown of Castile, under the reign of Ferdinand II of Aragon, on October 5, 1511, to accommodate the main government offices of the time.
This complex was called the “Royal Houses Building” because it housed the Royal Court, the first court established in the New World. It also served as the residence of governors and captain generals, known as the Captaincy General. Notable figures such as Bartholomew Columbus and Louis Ferrand resided here at different times.
The halls of the Royal Court were venues for important meetings and festivities involving the most prominent figures of the time.
- Alcázar de Colón - The Alcázar of Columbus was constructed between 1511 and 1514, inspired by the design of a pre-existing castle in Mancera de Abajo, Salamanca (Spain), remnants of which still exist in ruins.
Unfortunately, the architect responsible for this fortified palace’s construction is unknown. Its architectural style is primarily Mudejar Gothic, with some Renaissance features, especially in its arcades, and Elizabethan elements visible in the building’s decorative tassels.
Coral rock masonry materials were used in its construction. Initially, the palace had 55 rooms, but only 22 remain today.
- Columbus Lighthouse (Faro a Colón) - This monument, shaped like a cross, symbolizes the Christianization of the Americas, measuring approximately 800 meters long and 36.5 meters high. It is claimed that Admiral Christopher Columbus’s remains are located here, although genetic analyses have disproven this, confirming his remains are in the Cathedral of Seville.
When operational, the beacon emits a cross-shaped light into the night sky, visible from about 64 kilometers away. However, its use causes electricity supply issues in nearby neighborhoods, so it is only activated on special occasions.
- Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos - This national park is home to one of the city’s best-kept natural secrets, featuring four distinct lakes:
-
Sulfur Lake: The first lake visible upon entering the park, named for the whitish substance in its bed.
-
La Nevera: The third lake on the tour, named for its low temperatures due to limited direct sunlight.
-
The Ladies Lake: The second lake observed, previously used as a bathing area primarily for women due to its discreet location and shallow depth, reaching 2.5 meters at its deepest point.
-
Los Zaramagullones: The fourth lake, named after a species of native amphibian ducks. This lake is surrounded by natural vegetation.
