Nice ride back and forth, history of Santo Domingo? Ahh no - Nacho the tour guide and Erique the driver were very pleasent. Whenit came to the actual tour,I felt a bit let down. Would of enjoyed it more if I recieved more history of Santo Domingo and the history of Domincian Republic. It found things rather confusing..not a lot of discription on items we went to. Also had a buffet lunch, well most of us did. We were one of the last people in the line and most of the food was gone. We recieved left overs. And literally that is what we had. We drank a lot of water and cokes to make up for lack of food. I was a bit upset that we stopped at a very expensive chocolate shop, twice. A bar of chocolate was 12 American dollars! Stopped on the was and on return. Also we went to a souveer, which was just trinkets…over rated and insanly expensive. Bought nothing on this trip.

if Fawlty Towers were a "historical" tour of Santo Domingo - It was nice to exit the resort bubble to visit the Caribbean's oldest, most populous city. Nacho (the guide) is a deft linguist with wacky grandpa vibes who is entertaining in his way. On this tour, he wove among English, German, and Spanish: the latter were understandably the most fulsome of his remarks. However, someone better informed about actual history and more consistently responsive to the surroundings would have been welcome. On the 2.5-hour drive each way, I kept wishing he could tell us about the crops and livestock in the fields we were passing through. At the destination we had a tasty buffet lunch (even despite unreplenished items) at Atarazana, named for the royal shipyards built in 1509 – the oldest such edifice in the Americas. Unfortunately, I learned this basic fact from Wikipedia, not the guide. Much of the tour consisted of recorded material. At the Basilica of Santa María Menor, our guide was the pre-recorded audio tour and not much else. Most of our time at two museums consisted of viewing short films. The much-touted "4D" short film about the 1586 Battle of Santo Domingo cut out 10 minutes in, and though the film and the animated seats were perhaps basic, it didn't help to be told that "only seven minutes" remained when it was short to begin with. Indeed, the excursion was not so much a tour of a historic city as much as it was a pretext to extract $ at the newishly built ChocoMuseo – apparently a chain across Latin America – and a tourist-trappy souvenir shop in the city center. Having been on much more informative (free!) tours of other ancient cities around the world, I didn't find this one worth the $95 admission or, more importantly, the >5-hour round-trip commute eating into my precious few days. On both ends of the commute, some of our fellow resort patrons were jerks, shoving the seat of a lady who appeared to have a neck injury. The guide was in a difficult position to be sure, but his solution was to suggest that she move, rather than to correct misbehaving men. That tracked unfortunately with the unwelcome plug he gave for the ChocoMuseo's "choco tea" working such wonders on his prostate that, at 62, he felt like he was 25 "if you know what I mean." My dude, no one needs to be thinking of that, but this shambolic tour gave little else to think about.

YOU’LL LEARN MORE FROM WIKIPEDIA. SAVE YOUR MONEY! PS WOMEN BEWARE! - I’m not the type to write bad reviews. Or not to tip a tour guide. I can’t imagine anyone rating excellent for this tour unless they have zero tour experience and therefore no standards. I’ve done all types of tours/excursions all around Mexico/Yucatan, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Nassau, Freeport, the Everglades, Louisiana Bayou …. Usually they’re really good. The tour with NACHO is the WORST I’ve ever been on. I suppose he was hired because he knows multiple languages. If only that were enough. I’ll get to the actual abysmal TOUR QUALITY in a minute — see below under “OTHER DEFICIENCIES.” But here was the tipping point that caused me to write this review and give zero tip for Nacho (we still tipped the driver): we were 3 older women. My friend, whom I hope leaves a review, reclined her seat on the bus during the several hours ride. The young man behind her was irate, he wanted to have his knees propped up. He reached around and tapped her on the arm and told her to put her seat back up. When she didn’t obey, he slammed the seat forward violently, even breaking the reclining mechanism in the process. ON A PLANE HE WOULD HAVE BEEN KICKED OFF! NACHO was asked by my friend to intervene. She told him she had a compressed nerve in her neck, very true. Instead of appropriately telling the young man she had a right to recline her seat and advising him to move to an empty seat, NACHO TOLD HER TO MOVE. SO UNPROFESSIONAL! Many passengers had their seats reclined, because that is the point of providing a bus with that option. Was it because NACHO is sexist? He sure liked making jokes about his virility from drinking coca tea, referred to himself as handsome (while asking for $ tips), and joked about nacho/macho connection. Maybe also biased because the young man was a native Spanish speaker? Don’t know, don’t care. But I feel sorry for his wife and daughters. This was handled so poorly, the exact opposite of how it should have been. OTHER DEFICIENCIES: 1) The quality of the tour itself. NACHO bragged about knowing Santo Domingo so well, but we didn’t learn much from him about it or the Dominican Republic or Caribbean history or culture or agriculture or flora and fauna or architecture etc etc. On a HISTORICAL TOUR. Even when it would have been so easy — like when you’re standing by a historical wall (we Googled it) that the restaurant was named after, or a statue outside the restaurant of a woman who pioneered for women’s education (we Googled it). Even the most low hanging fruit was not low enough for NACHO. 2) It was a VERY long bus ride. Hours there and back. We expected this BUT most tour guides take that time to really teach you stuff. He was mostly silent unless barking like a dog or braying like a donkey or yodeling like a rooster. 3) We saw, went inside, experienced, and learned very little. The stops were measly and required almost nothing from our guide. 4) The longest stop was at a tacky souvenir shop!! An hour. NACHO pressured us to buy buy buy there. The pricing was communicated inconsistently and didn’t make any sense. And although we were told we would get great discounts (40% off hahaha), when we tried to buy 2 cheaply made children’s t shirts we were told $65 US dollars. Later in our trip, including even at our resort or the airport, we saw better prices (half to one third less) everywhere we went. 5) The “4D immersive film” that was much hyped up shut off a few minutes in. Instead of getting it queuing it back up where it had left off, we were shuffled out. We hadn’t even seen half of it!! 6) At the restaurant, buffet dishes ran out and the staff said “finito.” 7) After people got off the bus at the end, NACHO gave commentary about how much they did or didn’t tip him. Not Professional. I’ll stop there. Suffice it to say, the Dominican Republic is way behind others in tour excursion excellence judging by this tour.
