Journey to the Heart of Afro-Brazilian Heritage

As I embarked on the Quilombo Kaonge Tour, I was filled with anticipation. The allure of exploring the Afro-Brazilian culture of the Recôncavo Baiano was irresistible. Our journey began in Salvador, a city that pulses with life and history. The drive to Santo Amaro was a scenic one, with lush landscapes unfolding before us, a reminder of the rich biodiversity that this region holds.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Wilson, our guide, whose knowledge of history and languages was impressive. His passion for the culture was infectious, and as we made our way through the cobblestone streets of Santo Amaro, he painted vivid pictures of the past with his words. The town itself was a tapestry of colonial architecture, each building whispering stories of a bygone era. We paused at the bustling open-air market, a sensory delight with its vibrant colors and tantalizing aromas. Here, I couldn’t resist sampling the local fruits and the famous banana and guava candies.

The journey to Quilombo Kaonge was a step back in time. As we passed through fields of sugarcane, cassava, and tobacco, I felt a deep connection to the land and its history. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the community with open arms. Our first stop was with an elder, a 101-year-old griot, whose wisdom and knowledge of herbs were awe-inspiring. Her stories were a testament to the resilience and strength of the quilombo community.

We then moved on to learn about the traditional process of making dendê oil. The hands-on experience was both educational and humbling. As I worked alongside the residents, I was reminded of the importance of preserving these cultural practices. The sense of community and shared purpose was palpable, and it was a privilege to be a part of it, even if just for a day.
