Unveiling the Mysteries of Ciudad Perdida: A Trek Through Time and Nature
Embarking on a 4-day trek to the Lost City in Santa Marta was a dream come true for a biologist and environmental activist like me. The journey promised not only a physical challenge but also a deep dive into Colombia’s lush wilderness and rich cultural history.
Into the Heart of the Jungle
The anticipation was palpable as I embarked on the 4-day trek to the mythical Ciudad Perdida, a journey that promised not only a physical challenge but also a deep dive into the heart of Colombia’s lush wilderness. As a biologist and environmental activist, the opportunity to explore such an unspoiled terrain was irresistible. The trek began with a bumpy 4WD ride from Santa Marta to El Mamey, where the real adventure commenced. The path was a tapestry of vibrant greens, the air thick with the scent of earth and foliage, and the sounds of the jungle a constant companion.
Our small group, led by the incredible guides Jhoan, Miguel, and Abraham, set off with a sense of camaraderie and excitement. The guides’ passion for the land was infectious, and their knowledge of the area’s history and ecology added layers of depth to the experience. As we trekked through the dense jungle, crossing rivers and navigating steep inclines, their encouragement and support were invaluable. They were always ready with a helping hand or a word of motivation, ensuring that each of us felt safe and cared for.
The Journey to Teyuna
The second day of the trek was a test of endurance and spirit. We departed from our rustic accommodations at the crack of dawn, the jungle still cloaked in the soft light of early morning. The path led us through the indigenous settlement of Mutanyi, where we caught glimpses of the Kogui tribe’s way of life. It was a humbling reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that is woven into the fabric of this land.
As we approached the third camping site, Paraíso Teyuna, the anticipation of reaching the Lost City grew. The guides shared stories of the Tayrona civilization, painting vivid pictures of a time long past. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and it was clear that they were not just guides but stewards of this sacred place. The evening was spent under a canopy of stars, the sounds of the jungle lulling us to sleep, a reminder of the delicate balance of life in this ecosystem.
A Birthday to Remember
The third day was a milestone, both in the trek and in my life. Reaching the Lost City, Teyuna, was a moment of awe and reflection. Climbing the 1200 steps to the ancient terraces, I felt a profound connection to the past, to the people who once thrived in this hidden city. The guides’ insights into the archaeological significance of the site enriched the experience, making it not just a physical journey but a spiritual one as well.
To my surprise, the day held an unexpected celebration. It was my birthday, and the guides had orchestrated a heartwarming surprise. Two cakes, carried up the mountain by mule, appeared as if by magic. The gesture was a testament to the guides’ dedication and kindness, turning an already unforgettable day into a cherished memory. As we descended back to Paraíso Teyuna, the sense of accomplishment was palpable, and the bonds formed with my fellow trekkers and guides felt like a gift in itself.
The final day was a bittersweet farewell to the jungle, a return to the bustling world of Santa Marta. Yet, the memories of the trek, the beauty of the landscape, and the warmth of the people lingered long after. This journey to the Lost City was more than an adventure; it was a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural and cultural treasures for future generations. Lost City Trek
