Wind in Our Hair: Exploring Sal Island in Spinach Cars
When I stumbled upon the Spinach Cars in Santa Maria, I knew I had found a unique adventure. Join me as I share our family’s eco-friendly exploration of Sal Island, complete with wind-swept roads and a close call with the electric range.
Discovering the Spinach Cars
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique and eco-friendly adventures that can be enjoyed by the whole family. So, when I stumbled upon the Spinach Cars while strolling through Santa Maria, I knew I had found something special. These quirky little electric cars immediately caught my eye, and I was thrilled to learn about the various options for guided and self-led tours.
We decided to go for the 4-hour rental option, which offered a 60km range—perfect for a day of exploration without the kids getting too restless. The team at the office was incredibly helpful, providing us with a thorough introduction to the electric cars. They explained how these vehicles worked, likening them to a “beefed-up mobility scooter,” which gave us a good chuckle. Armed with an iPad for guidance and a sense of adventure, we set off with smiles on our faces.
The Open Road and the Wind
The moment we hit the open road, we were greeted by the island’s refreshing breeze. However, as the review had warned, the wind was quite noticeable, especially since the cars are open-topped with a cloth roof and no side doors. It was a bit of a challenge to hear the audio guides over the wind, but the visible route mapping on the iPad was a lifesaver. The roads were straightforward, and we quickly got the hang of navigating the island.
Despite the wind, the experience was exhilarating. We covered a significant portion of Sal Island, stopping wherever we pleased to take in the stunning landscapes. The freedom to explore at our own pace was a refreshing change from the usual guided tours. We even managed to visit some of the island’s must-see spots, like the Pedra de Lume salt pans and the charming harbor at Palmeira.
A Close Call with the Electric Range
As we made our way back to Santa Maria, we encountered a bit of a hiccup. The car’s electric range was dwindling, and it felt like we were in “limp-mode,” crawling along at a snail’s pace. For a moment, I was worried we wouldn’t make it back, but it turned into a fun part of our adventure story once we safely returned to the Spinach office.
This little hiccup aside, the experience was fantastic. It was a great value compared to hotel excursions and offered a much more unique way to explore the island. I wholeheartedly recommend the Sal Island Tour to any family looking for a memorable and eco-friendly adventure. Just be sure to keep an eye on that electric range!
