Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - A fascinating visit to St. Francis Basilica, showcasing early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, along with the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. After Saint Francis passed away in 1226, the friars constructed several small huts around the Porziuncola. By 1230, a refectory and some nearby buildings were added. Over time, small porticoes and accommodations for the friars were built around the Porziuncola. Foundations of these were uncovered during excavations beneath the current basilica’s floor between 1967 and 1969. As countless pilgrims flocked to Assisi for the “Pardon of Assisi,” the Porziuncola’s limited space became insufficient, necessitating the construction of a church incorporating the Porziuncola. The basilica’s construction began on 25 March 1569.
