- Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - A fascinating visit to St. Francis Basilica featuring early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, along with the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. After Saint Francis passed away in 1226, the friars constructed several small huts around the Porziuncola. By 1230, a refectory and additional buildings were added. Over time, small porticoes and accommodations for the friars were built around the Porziuncola. Foundations of these structures were uncovered during excavations beneath the current basilica’s floor between 1967 and 1969. As large numbers of pilgrims flocked to Assisi for the “Pardon of Assisi,” the Porziuncola’s limited space became insufficient, necessitating the construction of a church incorporating the Porziuncola. The basilica’s construction began on 25 March 1569.
- Basilica di Santa Chiara - Visit the Church of Santa Chiara, constructed between 1257 and 1265 after Santa Chiara’s death, around the ancient Church of San Giorgio, which housed St. Francis’s remains until 1230.
- Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani - A splendid Baroque residence with frescoed vaults from the early seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters. The Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi is displayed here, featuring a notable collection of medieval and Renaissance frescoes.
- Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - The mystical town of Saint Francis, still encircled by its ancient walls, is situated on the verdant slopes of Mount Subasio, with its colorful ink stone houses. Narrow streets, flower-adorned balconies, and noble palaces offer stunning views for memorable photographs (don’t forget your camera). A captivating visit to St. Francis Basilica with early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
- Assisi - Enjoy lunch at a typical restaurant (optional) before continuing the tour to Orvieto, where you can admire a Gothic architectural masterpiece with a dazzling façade of stained glass, mosaics, and sculptures.
- Duomo di Orvieto - The Orvieto Cathedral is one of Italy’s most beautiful, a Gothic architectural masterpiece in central Italy. This magnificent structure dominates the bluff on which Orvieto is situated due to its size. Its façade’s splendor is renowned worldwide, with towers reaching about 53 meters high. Don’t miss the Dome’s interior, adorned with stunning decorations and frescoes by some of history’s greatest painters, including Luca Signorelli’s famous Giudizio Universale.
- Orvieto - Discover Orvieto, one of Italy’s oldest cities, with origins tracing back to the Etruscan civilization. The first settlements date to the 9th century BC, located within the tufaceous caves of the massif where the Umbrian town now stands. While Orvieto’s fame is closely linked to its magnificent cathedral, the city offers numerous historical and artistic insights and itineraries, thanks to its ancient origins. Additionally, perched on a cliff, Orvieto provides truly breathtaking panoramic views.
