- Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels is a Roman Catholic church situated in Assisi, sharing its name with the town. Constructed between 1569 and 1679, following the designs of Galeazzo Alessi and with contributions from Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, the basilica is renowned for its Porziuncola, the chapel where Francis of Assisi engaged in prayer. The structure features a Latin cross layout, measuring 126 meters in length and 65 meters in width, and is distinguished by its simple and austere architecture, aligning with the Franciscan ideal of poverty. The basilica is also noted for its golden statue of the Virgin and the sacred sites linked to the life of St. Francis, such as the Transit and Roset.
- Casa natale di San Francesco - The birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi, located in a small area of Assisi, holds significant historical and religious importance. Here, St. Francis, originally named Giovanni, dedicated himself to acts of charity and a life of penance. The house has been visited by many, including St. Francis’ mother, Madonna Pica, who freed him from a misunderstanding of his condition. The house serves as a reference point for those wishing to better understand the life and experiences of St. Francis.
- Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - The tombs of Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi are sites of immense religious and historical significance. Saint Clare is interred in St. George’s Church, while St. Francis’ body was moved to a lower church for his final resting place. The crypt of Saint Clare, excavated beneath the main altar of the lower basilica, was created to house his body, which was discovered under the main altar of San Francisco. St. Francis’ tomb was uncovered in 1818, and the crypt was redesigned in a neoclassical style in 1934. These sites attract numerous pilgrims and form the heart of the Franciscan shrine in Assisi.
