Saddle Up for a Caribbean Adventure: Exploring Arikok’s Hidden Gems
Trading my surfboard for a saddle, I embarked on a horseback riding tour through Arikok National Park. This adventure promised a journey through nature’s untouched beauty, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. Join me as I explore the island from a different perspective.
A Saddle Adventure in Arikok
The Caribbean has always been my playground, a place where the ocean’s embrace feels like home. But this time, I traded my surfboard for a saddle and embarked on a horseback riding tour through Arikok National Park. As a former professional surfer, the idea of exploring the island from a different perspective intrigued me. The tour promised a journey through nature’s untouched beauty, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.
Our group was small, just nine of us, which made the experience feel intimate and personal. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable, ensuring that each of us was paired with a horse that matched our experience level. I had only been on a horse a couple of times before, but the guides made me feel at ease. Helmets were optional, and I decided to go without, feeling the wind in my hair as we set off on our adventure.
The ride through Arikok was nothing short of breathtaking. The park’s diverse flora and fauna were a feast for the eyes, and the absence of vehicle traffic on the Nacho Trail made the experience even more serene. As we rode up into the highlands, the views of the island were nothing short of spectacular. It was a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Oranjestad, where our cruise had docked.
Discovering the Natural Pool
Our journey led us to the famous Natural Pool, a hidden gem nestled among volcanic rocks. Known locally as “Conchi,” this stunning formation resembled a miniature mountain range. We had a 30-minute break to explore the area, and I couldn’t resist taking a dip in the pool. The water was refreshing, a perfect way to cool off after the ride.
Swimming in the Natural Pool was a surreal experience. The volcanic rocks created a natural barrier, allowing the ocean’s waves to crash against them while we swam in the calm waters. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the ocean’s power and beauty. As someone who spends most of my time riding waves, this was a different kind of connection with the sea.
After our swim, it was time to saddle up and head back. The return journey was timed perfectly with the sunset, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a magical end to an unforgettable day, a reminder of why I love island life so much.
A New Perspective on Island Life
The entire experience lasted about five hours, including the pickup and drop-off from our cruise pier. The tour itself was around three hours, but it felt like time stood still as we explored the park’s natural wonders. The weather was slightly overcast, which was a blessing as it kept the heat at bay.
This horseback riding tour was a highlight of my travels, offering a unique perspective on the island’s beauty. It was a chance to connect with nature in a way that I hadn’t before, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to see a different side of Aruba. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a novice like me, the guides ensure that everyone feels comfortable and safe.
As I sipped a cold drink at the bar back at Rancho Loco, I reflected on the day’s adventure. It was a reminder that there’s always more to explore, even in a place as familiar as the Caribbean. So, if you find yourself in Santa Cruz, don’t miss the chance to experience the Horseback Riding Tour and discover the island’s hidden treasures.
