From Surf to Summit: Conquering Santa Ana Volcano

When the waves are calm, I seek adventure on land. The Santa Ana Volcano Tour in El Salvador promised a thrilling hike and breathtaking views, and it did not disappoint. Join me as I recount my journey to the summit and beyond.

The Early Morning Adventure

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself in the back of a van, heading towards the Santa Ana Volcano. My wife and I had been picked up by Francis, our guide for the day, who was as punctual as he was enthusiastic. The van was already buzzing with energy from two other groups who were joining us on this adventure. It was a refreshing change from the solitude of the ocean waves I usually chase.

Francis kept us entertained with fascinating tidbits about the region, and even offered a pit stop for coffee. As a surfer, I’m no stranger to early mornings, but a caffeine boost is always welcome. We soon arrived at a hotel where we could freshen up before the hike. The restroom cost a mere 40 cents, a small price to pay for comfort before embarking on the trek.

The Ascent to the Summit

The hike began with a half-mile walk to the check-in point, the last chance for a bathroom break. The trail to the summit was rated a 2 out of 5 in difficulty, but I found myself working up a good sweat. It was the perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment, much like catching the perfect wave.

As we climbed, the air grew thick with the scent of sulfur, a reminder of the volcanic activity beneath our feet. The views, however, were nothing short of breathtaking. The emerald green lagoon nestled within the crater was a sight to behold, and no photograph could truly capture its beauty. Francis, ever the helpful guide, doubled as a photographer, ensuring we had plenty of memories to take home.

A Well-Deserved Rest

After spending a blissful 30 minutes at the summit, indulging in ice cream and soaking in the views, we began our descent. The trail was bustling with other groups making their way up, a testament to the volcano’s allure. According to my trusty Strava app, the hike totaled 5.4 miles with a 1500ft elevation gain.

Our adventure didn’t end there. We were whisked away to a nearby restaurant with a stunning view of a lake, the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day’s journey. As we made our way back to the hotel, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of fulfillment. The Santa Ana Volcano had offered a different kind of thrill, one that complemented my love for the ocean and the waves.

This experience was a reminder that while the sea will always be my first love, the land holds its own treasures waiting to be discovered. If you ever find yourself in El Salvador, don’t miss the chance to explore this natural gem. Santa Ana Volcano Tour
