Historical Note: Tobacco Bay was significant during the American War of Independence due to the notorious Gunpowder Plot of 1775. On the night of August 15th, 1775, a group of Bermudians, supportive of the American cause and led by Colonel Henry Tucker, stole 100 barrels of gunpowder from the British Powder Magazine. The barrels were rolled down a hill to Tobacco Bay, where Bermudian whaling vessels transferred the cargo to two American schooners, the Lady Catherine and the Packet, waiting nearby.
