St. Michael the Great was established in 1542 as a mission among the Purépecha and Guamara Indians. It quickly flourished, becoming a key junction on the routes connecting mining towns with the capital of New Spain. Many of its principal structures were constructed in the 18th century, during its most prosperous era. During this same period (1740 - 1776), the magnificent sanctuary of Atotonilco was also built, contributing to the rich Baroque ambiance of both sites.
