Riding the Waves of Flavor: A Craft Beer Adventure in San Juan
When the waves take a backseat, it’s time to explore the craft beer scene in San Juan. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a pint glass and embark on a flavorful journey through Puerto Rico’s finest breweries.
A Journey Through Puerto Rico’s Craft Beer Scene
When the ocean calls, I usually answer with a surfboard in hand, but this time, the call was different. It was the allure of hops and barley, the promise of a craft beer tour in San Juan that piqued my interest. As someone who thrives on the rhythm of the waves, I was curious to see if the craft beer scene could offer a similar thrill.
The day began with a scenic drive through the lush landscapes of Puerto Rico. The air-conditioned comfort of our private vehicle was a welcome change from the salty breeze of the ocean. Our guide, a seasoned beer enthusiast, regaled us with tales of the island’s brewing history as we made our way to the heart of San Juan. The anticipation built with each passing mile, and I found myself eager to dive into this new adventure.
Discovering FOK Brewing Co.
Our first stop was FOK Brewing Co., a haven for artisan native beer lovers. The atmosphere was electric, with music playing and food trucks lining the perimeter. It was a vibrant scene, reminiscent of a lively beach party, but with the added allure of craft beer.
I sampled a variety of brews, each one offering a unique taste of Puerto Rico. The flavors were as diverse as the island itself, with hints of tropical fruits and spices that danced on my palate. The service was impeccable, and the staff’s passion for their craft was evident in every pour. It was a delightful experience, one that left me with a newfound appreciation for the art of brewing.
Savoring the Flavors at Old Harbor Brewery
Next, we ventured to Old Harbor Brewery, the island’s first artisanal brewery. Established in 1996, this brewery has been a pioneer in Puerto Rico’s craft beer scene. The beers here were brewed for flavor, with each sip offering a symphony of fruity, soft, sweet, and floral notes.
I couldn’t resist trying the Coqui Helles and the Santo Viejo Pilsner, both of which were exceptional. The Taina Blonde Ale and Kofresi Stout were also standouts, each one a testament to the brewery’s commitment to quality and freshness. As I savored each sip, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the ocean’s waves—each one unique, yet part of a greater whole.
As the day came to a close, our private vehicle whisked us back to the city center, our hearts and minds brimming with cherished memories. The craft beer tour had been an extraordinary adventure, one that rivaled even the most exhilarating surf sessions. It was a reminder that the spirit of adventure can be found in the most unexpected places, and that sometimes, the best journeys are the ones that take you off the beaten path.
