Surfing Through Time: A Day at the Caracol Maya Ruins in Belize

Trading surfboards for history books, I ventured into the heart of Belize to explore the ancient Maya city of Caracol. Join me as I recount a day filled with jungle adventures, ancient pyramids, and refreshing river swims.

Journey to the Heart of the Maya World

The sun was just beginning to rise over the lush Belizean landscape as I found myself in San Ignacio, ready to embark on a journey to the ancient city of Caracol. As a surfer, I’m used to chasing waves, but this time, I was chasing history. The anticipation was palpable as our small group gathered, and soon we were off, leaving the comforts of the town behind and venturing into the heart of the jungle.

Our ride was a sturdy 9-seater Ford bus, perfect for the rugged terrain that lay ahead. The first part of our journey was a smooth drive through the countryside, but soon the road turned into a thrilling jungle track. It was a bumpy ride, but the excitement of what lay ahead kept our spirits high. Our guide, a fountain of knowledge, shared stories of the Maya civilization, setting the stage for the wonders we were about to witness.

Exploring the Ancient Ruins of Caracol

Arriving at Caracol was like stepping back in time. The site, sprawling and majestic, was a testament to the engineering prowess of the Maya people. Our guide led us through the ruins, his explanations bringing the ancient city to life. From the towering Caana pyramid to the intricate carvings on the stelas, every corner of Caracol whispered tales of a bygone era.

Climbing the Caana pyramid was a highlight. Standing atop the highest man-made structure in Belize, I was rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle and even glimpses of neighboring Guatemala. It was a moment of reflection, a reminder of the impermanence of human endeavors and the enduring beauty of nature.

A Refreshing Dip in the Jungle

After a morning of exploration, we gathered for a picnic lunch on a covered terrace. The homemade Belizean fare was delicious, a perfect blend of flavors that satisfied our hunger. With our energy replenished, we made our way to the Rio On Pools, a series of natural swimming holes nestled in the jungle.

The pools were a welcome respite from the heat, and I couldn’t resist the allure of the cool, clear water. Climbing over rocks and standing under small waterfalls, I felt a sense of freedom that only nature can provide. The water was a bit cloudy, but that didn’t deter me from enjoying every moment. For those who preferred to stay dry, the warm rocks by the river offered a perfect spot to relax and soak in the sun.

As the day came to a close, we made our way back to San Ignacio, our hearts full of memories and our minds enriched with the stories of the Maya. This adventure was a reminder that while I may be a surfer at heart, there’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored, one ancient ruin at a time.
