Actun Tunichil Muknal (Cave of the Stone Sepulchre), hailed by National Geographic as the premier sacred cave to explore globally, is a must-visit for your bucket list! Begin your adventure from San Ignacio in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle with a 45-minute drive to the ranger outpost. Upon arrival, our guides will equip you with a helmet, headlamp, and life jacket if necessary. Once prepared, embark on a journey to hike, wade, and swim through the sacrificial Mayan underworld of the ATM. The adventure includes three river crossings and a 30-minute hike leading to an hourglass-shaped entrance. Beyond this point, the cave system extends approximately 3 miles, featuring stalactites, stalagmites, imposing boulders, and freshwater streams ranging from ankle to waist deep. The cavern culminates in the main chamber, where the calcified, sparkling remains of the “Crystal Maiden” rest, believed to be the skeletal remains of a young woman sacrificed in a bloodletting ceremony to the “gods.”
