- Chiesa di San Pio - Following Padre Pio’s passing, his fellow friars, deeply attuned to the physical and spiritual requisites of the faithful, realized the need for a larger sanctuary as the existing one was insufficient. Subsequently, after reviewing numerous proposals, the friars commissioned architect Renzo Piano to design a new church with a capacity for 6,500 attendees. In terms of size, it is second only to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Originally dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, the newly envisioned sanctuary by Renzo Piano, with its vast conch-like structure, stands as Italy’s second-largest church, surpassed only by the Duomo in Milan. The construction, which spanned a decade, resulted in the Church of St. Pio, also known as the new Sanctuary, predominantly funded by donations from pilgrims. It is now capable of accommodating 6,500 individuals simultaneously.

San Giovanni Rotondo is renowned worldwide as the birthplace of St. Pio (commonly known as Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina, and as the city where the revered monk performed his miracles. Pio was beatified in 2002. At the Capuchin Monastery, Padre Pio received the stigmata in 1918, and it was here that the supernatural events leading to his sainthood and canonization occurred. Visiting this Monastery and exploring the rooms where St. Pio lived offers a journey into spirituality and mysticism; it is a destination that both the faithful and tourists should strive to visit. The Church’s crypt housed the tomb of St. Pio until a few years ago. Adjacent to the Monastery stands the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. This profound blend of historical, religious, and architectural elements makes the Sanctuaries of Padre Pio an undeniable point of interest for everyone, including those who are not particularly religious or do not follow any faith.
