The tour was very interesting and I learned a lot about Chinatown's history and present-day community. I was also very pleased to be able to support this not-for-profit program involving high school students, not only providing tours but also rehabilitating laneways.

I enjoyed the tour and thought the young tour guide did a good but not great, job. He spoke too fast, he wasn't particularly personable, though he told us he used to be very introverted, so for him to do public speaking is a good thing, for him, but not necessarily for his tour group. A few constructive ideas: there was no organization at Portsmouth Square. We arrived at 10:45 as requested. The two tour guides arrived closer to 11:00. They did not make themselves known, we had to guess they were our guides, by asking them. Holding up a simple sign with "Chinatown Alleyway Tours" would be an obvious thing to do. The first talk, which centers around Portsmouth Square and CDCD, is way too long. I suggest adding in another alley or two instead. I think some of the extraordinary discrimination against Chinese Americans has been watered down, and the history aspects could be more detailed and cohesively organized and presented. The reasons why the girls and women were rescued by Donaldina Cameron was also watered down. I did learn some details that I didn't know before, but I have more knowledge of Chinatown and the Chinese in America than a tourist from the mid-west, for example. I think your program is excellent training for these young people, but their tour is only as good as the material they are given.

I wanted a tour run by people who love SF Chinatown as much as I do, and I got it. I was really excited about this tour and our guide didn't get annoyed when I asked a ton of questions. We had a perfect day on Saturday, and this tour was the cornerstone. I also loved that my middle-school age kids had a tour guide who is a student at UC Davis and is also active in the SF Chinatown community.
