The two young guides were very passionate and knowledgeable about the history and current issues faced by the community. We could not have gained the same appreciation of the alleways, or found them, had we walked on our own.
Without the expert guidance of Eric and Andy, we could have easily have walked through Chinatown oblivious to the history and significance of buildings that we passed. Their self-effacing attitude was endearing, and their dedication to improving an area dear to their hearts was evident. I would recommend this trip to anyone visiting San Francisco who wants to go beyond the tacky tourist areas and learn a little of how this great city came about. 5 stars.
Shirley our guide was really knowledgable & enthusiastic about the Chinatown area
Erik was great. He gave us a sincere look at Chinatown and caused me to love it more.
Our guide was very good
Elsa was tremendously knowledgeable, and able to relate her own story with the history of Chinatown in a way that made the tour much more illuminating than a simple recitation of facts and figures. Highly recommended.
Our tour guide Eric was very knowledgeable, compassionate, and filled us with a lot of information. We enjoyed him as could feel his passion for what he does. We were amazed with reconstruction of the alleyways and the cleanliness showed us that how proud they were. Eric filled us with a lot of history that we found amazing. Thank you Eric for a wonderful time.!!!
The tour was very interesting and I learned a lot about Chinatown's history and present-day community. I was also very pleased to be able to support this not-for-profit program involving high school students, not only providing tours but also rehabilitating laneways.
I enjoyed the tour and thought the young tour guide did a good but not great, job. He spoke too fast, he wasn't particularly personable, though he told us he used to be very introverted, so for him to do public speaking is a good thing, for him, but not necessarily for his tour group. A few constructive ideas: there was no organization at Portsmouth Square. We arrived at 10:45 as requested. The two tour guides arrived closer to 11:00. They did not make themselves known, we had to guess they were our guides, by asking them. Holding up a simple sign with "Chinatown Alleyway Tours" would be an obvious thing to do. The first talk, which centers around Portsmouth Square and CDCD, is way too long. I suggest adding in another alley or two instead. I think some of the extraordinary discrimination against Chinese Americans has been watered down, and the history aspects could be more detailed and cohesively organized and presented. The reasons why the girls and women were rescued by Donaldina Cameron was also watered down. I did learn some details that I didn't know before, but I have more knowledge of Chinatown and the Chinese in America than a tourist from the mid-west, for example. I think your program is excellent training for these young people, but their tour is only as good as the material they are given.
I wanted a tour run by people who love SF Chinatown as much as I do, and I got it. I was really excited about this tour and our guide didn't get annoyed when I asked a ton of questions. We had a perfect day on Saturday, and this tour was the cornerstone. I also loved that my middle-school age kids had a tour guide who is a student at UC Davis and is also active in the SF Chinatown community.
It increased my knowledge of the alleys and Chinatown.
You guides were awesome!! We loved loved the tour and esp the student guides.
This was the best part of our Bay experience. We were very impressed with the professionalism of the tour guides, the quality of the information and the service that CCDC has given to the Chinatown San Francisco community. If you come to the Bay Area, don't miss this tour.
Our tour guide was personable and knowledgeable. She was obviously doing this because she loves her neighborhood. She was a wealth of information, and gave us many chances to ask questions.
