I can't recommend this tour highly enough - the highlight of my trip to SF. I enjoyed learning from an eloquent, informative and articulate host about the fascinating history of the Tenderloin - especially its union, LGBT, ethnic minority and working-class links - and seeing places I would not otherwise have had access too (Cadillac Hotel) or understood the backstory to (Boddecker Park). More importantly, though, it totally changed my perspective; instead of walking through an area of very visible poverty and homelessness and leaving depressed and shocked about what I saw, I left feeling empowered by having heard about resistance, service and outreach provision, active community organising, church and charity initiatives and the power of policy and legislation (such as tenancy rights, curbs on developers etc) to bring about change for the better. Instead of a "poverty safari", as these things can so often be, it was a walk that made me think about solidarity and hope.

Great experience. Good history of Tenderloin. Plus info on current efforts to help residents without housing.
