A Serene Start to the Day

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself in San Cristobal de las Casas, a town that feels like a hidden gem nestled in the highlands of Chiapas. My wife and I had heard whispers of the Sumidero Canyon and Chiapa de Corzo Tour and decided it was time to trade the surfboard for a day of exploration. Our driver, Raul, arrived promptly at 8:50 a.m., a full ten minutes ahead of schedule, which was a pleasant surprise given our somewhat remote location. His punctuality set the tone for the day, and we were soon on our way to the Sumidero Canyon National Park.

As we drove through the winding roads, I couldn’t help but compare the landscape to the coastal views I’m so accustomed to. After the boat tour, we made our way to the village of Chiapa de Corzo. While the church was unfortunately closed, the town still offered a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region. We wandered through the vibrant textile and craft stalls, admiring the intricate handiwork that reflected the area’s heritage. It was a different kind of exploration, one that connected us to the people and traditions of Chiapas.

As the day came to a close, Raul expertly navigated the journey back to San Cristobal de las Casas. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It had been a full and enjoyable day, one that left us with a deeper appreciation for the natural and cultural wonders of Chiapas. As we settled in for a relaxing evening, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique adventure, one that added a new dimension to our nomadic lifestyle.
