Surfing the Sweet Waves of Costa Rican Chocolate
In search of a new adventure, I traded my surfboard for a chocolate tour in San Carlos, Costa Rica. Join me as I dive into the world of chocolate making, sugar cane tasting, and the vibrant culture of Arenal Vida Campesina.
A Sweet Escape to San Carlos
As a professional surfer, my life is a constant pursuit of the perfect wave, but every now and then, I find myself drawn to the allure of new experiences on land. This time, it was the promise of unlimited chocolate tastings that lured me to the lush landscapes of San Carlos, Costa Rica. My wife and I, both adventurers at heart, decided to take a break from the ocean’s embrace and dive into the world of chocolate at the Costa Rican Chocolate Tour.
The journey to San Carlos was a scenic one, with the Arenal Volcano standing majestically in the distance, its peak shrouded in mist. As we arrived at Arenal Vida Campesina, the air was thick with the scent of cocoa and coffee, a tantalizing prelude to the day’s indulgence. The tour began with a walk through the coffee and chocolate plantations, where we learned about the intricate processes that transform raw beans into the rich, velvety chocolate we all love. The highlight, of course, was the opportunity to make our own chocolate, a hands-on experience that was as educational as it was delicious.
The Art of Chocolate Making
The process of making chocolate is an art form, one that requires patience and precision. Our guide, a passionate chocolatier, walked us through each step, from roasting the cocoa beans to grinding them into a smooth paste. As we worked, the air was filled with the intoxicating aroma of chocolate, a scent that seemed to wrap around us like a warm embrace.
We were encouraged to taste as we went along, savoring the transformation of flavors from bitter to sweet. It was a sensory journey, one that engaged all our senses and left us with a newfound appreciation for the craft. The best part? We could eat as much chocolate as we wanted, a dream come true for any chocolate lover.
A Taste of Costa Rica
After our chocolate-making adventure, we turned our attention to the other delights that Arenal Vida Campesina had to offer. We sampled fresh sugar cane juice, a refreshing treat that was both sweet and invigorating. Our guide also introduced us to guaro, a traditional Costa Rican spirit made from sugar cane, which we sipped slowly, enjoying its smooth, warming effect.
The tour concluded with a traditional Costa Rican snack, paired with freshly brewed coffee. As we sat at the table, surrounded by the vibrant greenery of the farm, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment. It was a reminder that while the ocean will always be my first love, there are countless other adventures waiting to be discovered on land. This chocolate tour was a sweet escape, a delightful detour from the waves that I will cherish until my next land-based adventure.
