Equinox Adventures in San Carlos: Explore Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna Waterfall

Experience the equinox in San Carlos, Costa Rica, where the balance of nature is celebrated with hikes around the majestic Arenal Volcano and refreshing swims at La Fortuna Waterfall. With mild weather and a chance of rain, these adventures promise an unforgettable connection to the vibrant landscapes and rich culture of the region.

Discover the Mystical Arenal Volcano

As the equinox approaches, San Carlos in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica offers a unique opportunity to embrace the balance of nature. The Arenal Volcano, a majestic natural wonder, stands as a testament to the earth’s dynamic forces. On March 22nd, the weather is mild and comfortable, making it an ideal day for a volcano hike. With temperatures ranging from 64.1°F to 79.6°F, the day begins with overcast skies that gradually give way to partly cloudy conditions. This transition creates a mystical atmosphere, perfect for exploring the diverse flora and fauna of the region.

The Arenal Volcano Naturalistic Hike is available from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. As you embark on this journey, you’ll be guided by experienced naturalists who will share fascinating insights into the volcano’s history and the geological processes that have shaped the landscape. The El Silencio Reserve, with its 225 hectares of protected land, offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the area. As you traverse the trails, keep an eye out for the vibrant wildlife that calls this region home.

“Fantastic enjoyable experience - Brilliantly organized tour. Carlos was fantastic from the beginning: great communication, clear and timely. He went above and beyond helping to find parking for our car. Then Monica, the guide showed so much knowledge and passion that we enjoyed and learned about the volcano, history of the area, flora and fauna. They also bring their own professional photographer- the pictures were great and included in the service. Very competitive price. Reliable and fantastic experience - totally recommend it.” - Reviewed on 2025-01-02

Dive into the Refreshing Waters of La Fortuna

On March 23rd, the weather takes a turn with a high likelihood of rain, but this only adds to the allure of the Costa Rican landscape. The overcast skies and intermittent rain showers create a serene backdrop for a waterfall swim at La Fortuna. Available from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, this adventure promises an unforgettable experience.

Imagine swimming in a natural river with the gentle breeze from a 70-meter high waterfall behind you. The La Fortuna Waterfall, originating from the river of the same name, is a sight to behold. As you make your way to the waterfall, you’ll be guided through the vibrant area, where you can choose to admire the stunning waterfall from the viewpoint or take a 300-meter walk along a steep yet secure path to get closer. Swimming in the river is permitted, though not near the waterfall, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

“La Fortuna Waterfall - Jason was an excellent guide, always keeping track of the whole group. It’s a ways down but so beautiful and then a huge lunch that was fabulous. Highly recommend!” - Reviewed on 2025-01-22

The farm embodies Costa Rica’s agricultural heritage, providing visitors with a genuine insight into rural life. At La Finquita, you’ll learn about the innovative application of microorganisms and sustainable methods that rejuvenate the soil and yield high-quality, chemical-free produce. This tour beautifully combines the natural beauty of La Fortuna Waterfall with the practical experience of sustainable farming, fostering a deeper connection to nature, healthy eating, and Costa Rican culture.

“Professional in every way! - We were picked up timely and our guide Bernado was highly professional. We toured with a couple from Spain on their honeymoon. Bernardo spoke fluent English and Spanish which made our trip even better. The waterfall location was a short drive from our hotel. They had towels and cold water available for us. As we walked, Bernardo found unusual wildlife and took the time to help us take photos and set up his sighting scope. The entire experience was top notch!” - Reviewed on 2024-10-24
