San Agustín City Tour & Archaeological Park
San Agustín - On the San Agustín City tour, participants will explore the vibrant areas where the town’s daily life unfolds. The tour will share the town’s most renowned stories and offer tips to enhance the experience. It begins at the market, known as the “gallery,” where local farmers sell fresh produce, including unique fruits like guamas, granadillas, papayas, and tree tomatoes, which visitors can sample. The tour continues to the central square, visiting the church and Simón Bolívar park, then proceeds along pottery street and handicrafts street, featuring authentic shops with Andean and indigenous musical instruments and guadua crafts. The tour can be customized to suit timing and content preferences. Lunch will be at a traditional San Agustín restaurant.
San Agustín Archaeological Park - The tour includes a visit to the renowned San Agustín Archaeological Park, just a 10-minute drive from town. Here, visitors can admire the legacy of an ancient civilization through iconic statues, tombs, and monuments. The tour covers the small Archaeological Museum, Mesitas A, B, C, and D, the Forest of the Statues, the stunning Lavapatas Fountain, and Alto del Lavapatas. The full route spans approximately 3 km with some ascents up to 70 m, but it can be tailored to visitors’ interests and time constraints.
Finca El Maco - After the excursions, guests will be transported to their hotel, “Finca Ecologica El Maco” (or a similar option, based on availability). Here, they can relax in nature and unwind in the garden areas. The hotel features a restaurant for dining needs. On weekends, guests can visit Club Maco, which offers a diverse cultural program for entertainment.
Local Coffee Farm & Archaeological Horseback-Riding (Pelota, Purutal, Tablón, Chaquira)
Finca La Cabaña - Following a delightful breakfast, a driver will be ready to take guests to a local coffee farm. Coffee is a vital product for San Agustín’s economy and other towns in the region, known for producing Colombia’s finest specialty coffees. The tour includes a visit to an organic coffee farm, where participants can learn about the bean production process authentically, from seed and sowing to the final product. The guide, Luis Alejandro, owner of Finca La Cabaña, will proudly share the success of his work and his father’s, who began coffee cultivation over 50 years ago. At the tour’s end, Luis will invite guests to savor his exceptional specialty coffees. The tour can be customized to fit timing and content preferences. Afterward, guests will enjoy a typical lunch at a local restaurant before embarking on a horseback-riding tour.
La Pelota - Estatuas A Color - Guests can experience San Agustín’s most famous horseback-riding tour, led by an expert local guide. The circuit covers four archaeological sites, starting with a 40-minute ride through the town’s rural area to La Pelota, where three statues are located near their original discovery site, along with remnants of an original mound. (Alternative transportation options like car, walking, or biking are available upon request).
El Purutal - Just a short distance away is El Purutal, home to four more statues, two of which still retain their original coloration, believed to have been common among many monoliths in the area.
El Tablon - The tour continues to El Tablón, an archaeological site displaying five statues approximately 2 meters tall, classified as female. A small ethnographic museum, organized by El Tablón township residents, is also located here (subject to availability). Reaching El Tablón requires a walk of less than 15 minutes.
La Chaquira - The journey proceeds to La Chaquira, an archaeological site featuring various human and animal figures carved into volcanic stone, overlooking the breathtaking Magdalena River canyon, one of San Agustín’s most spectacular views. Reaching La Chaquira involves a descent on foot in under 30 minutes, with the return ascent taking about 1 hour. The adventure concludes with a return to town or the selected hotel.
