- Farol da Barra - The bike ride begins in the historic neighborhood of Barra, where in 1535, Vila do Pereira, the first Portuguese settlement in America, was established by Francisco Pereira Coutinho.
The initial stop is at Ponta do Padrão, home to the renowned Forte de Santo Antonio da Barra, commonly known as the Barra Lighthouse. This fort was strategically constructed atop a hill at the city’s southern tip, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the entrance to Todos-os-Santos Bay, the largest bay in the country, on the other.
Recognized as the first Portuguese military structure in Brazil, the fort is a symbol of the Bahian capital and currently hosts the Bahia Nautical Museum.
This area is also a vibrant social hub, where visitors can enjoy leisure activities, cycling, or relaxing at the local cafes. It is also the perfect spot to witness a stunning sunset!
Let’s continue!
- Praia do Porto da Barra - The journey proceeds towards Barra Port Beach, a beloved beach in the city, sheltered by Todos-os-Santos Bay, featuring pristine and tranquil waters, ideal for swimming!
The stop is between the Forts of Santa Maria and São Diogo. The former is now the Pierre Verger Museum, showcasing a remarkable collection by the French photographer, while the latter hosts an interactive museum by Argentine artist Caribé.
This location served as a natural port where Brazil’s first governor-general, Tome de Sousa, landed in 1549 to establish Salvador, Brazil’s first capital for over two centuries.
- Ondina Beach - Traveling along Oceanica Avenue, a favored carnival route for Salvador’s residents, the tour passes the striking sculpture of the Christ of Barra and the Spanish Club of Bahia.
Arriving in the Ondina neighborhood, visitors will encounter the famous “Gordinhas de Ondina,” a tribute by Bahian artist Eliana Kértsz to the three main cultures that shaped the Brazilian people: indigenous, African, and European. It’s a great photo opportunity!
- Praia do Rio Vermelho - Continuing along the coast, the tour reaches the bohemian neighborhood of Rio Vermelho, a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, known for its abundance of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.
The neighborhood offers a glimpse into the past with its well-preserved Portuguese houses, churches, and a museum cherished by Bahians: The Casa do Rio Vermelho, the former home of writers Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai, now a popular museum.
- Largo de Santana - The ride along the waterfront is leisurely, with many stories to share, especially since this is where the traditional Iemanjá festival is celebrated on February 2nd, the largest public religious event of candomblé in Bahia. A visit to Iemanjá’s house is planned.
Largo de Santana is a bustling area, particularly in the afternoon, where the aroma of palm oil tempts visitors to try one of Bahia’s favorite dishes, Dinha’s acarajé!
- Largo da Mariquita - Largo da Mariquita is a top destination for both locals and tourists seeking entertainment, offering a rich cultural and culinary experience with bars, restaurants, and stalls selling acarajé, coconut, tapioca, and other treats. Shall we sample some?
It was on this reef-filled beach that the Portuguese Diogo Álvares Correia, known as Caramuru, was shipwrecked in 1509. The area, now known as Vila Caramuru, is a popular gastronomic center. He married the Tupinambá chief’s daughter, Catarina Paraguaçu, forming the first Brazilian Catholic family.
Now it’s time to pedal back to the starting point in Barra!
