I chose this event to have a great time with my family. I am shocked and heartbroken that the person (Mr. Tucker) narrating the ghost walk used it as a racist platform. The local historic society (including Gary Freeze) have worked diligently to prove and show facts pertaining to the fact that slaves existed in downtown Salisbury. I encourage anyone believing Mr. Tucker to visit the exhibit at the Rowan museum. Mr. Tucker stated that slaves did not exist in downtown Salisbury. Mr. Tucker used the words “servants” instead of slaves and when he was corrected he stated that “servants” were treated fairly well in Salisbury, even allowing William Valentine to operate a business in Salisbury as a barber who was freed. In 1850 Rowan County had 115 free people of color and 3,854 SLAVES. Mr. Tucker portrayed himself as a historian and a Lutheran minister. It is absolutely sickening that Mr. Tucker implied that slaves were leased, able to pick jobs prior to Civil War, and paid a wage. Mr. Tucker portrayed himself as a Historian but I am a masters level social worker fighting for those oppressed every single day. I can guarantee you that his recount of Salisbury’s slavery events are not true or validated. Mr. Tucker I just want you to know that I am going to make noise in Salisbury to make sure everyone knows what kind of business you are running.
