- Hawthorne Hotel - Founded in 1925, the Hawthorne Hotel is named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, Salem’s most famous author. It has been featured in the show Bewitched and the film Joy. The hotel boasts an elegant lobby, a restaurant, and a gift shop.
- Nathaniel Hawthorne Statue - This statue of the author Nathaniel Hawthorne is located in a small park in front of the Hawthorne Hotel. Born nearby, Hawthorne is one of Salem’s most notable figures.
- Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace - Originally located near the Hawthorne Hotel, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s home was moved to the grounds of the House of the Seven Gables for preservation. It is part of a historical complex, and entry requires admission to the House of the Seven Gables.
- The House of the Seven Gables - This is one of the largest timber-framed colonial mansions in North America, still on its original foundation. Built in 1668 for sea merchant John Turner, it later belonged to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s relatives. The grounds include additional buildings and a garden. Visitors can enter the gift shop for free or choose from various tour options to explore the house or just the grounds and garden.
- Ye Olde Pepper Companie - Known as the oldest candy company in the United States, Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie is famous for two local specialties: the gibralter and the black jack.
- The Derby House - Once home to one of Salem’s wealthiest sea merchants, Elias Derby, the Derby House is now part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Visitors can view the front of the house or explore the backyard garden.
- The Custom House - Dating back to 1819, when Salem was a maritime hub, ship captains paid duties on imported goods here. Now part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, visitors can admire the exterior or explore both floors inside.
- Derby Wharf - Built in 1762 by sea merchant Elias Derby, Derby Wharf is 2,000 feet long and once housed around 20 buildings. Today, it features the Pedrick Store House, the three-masted Friendship of Salem ship, and the Derby Wharf Lightstation at the end. Visitors can enjoy the waterfront views, relax by the water, or walk to the lighthouse. The wharf is part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.
- Derby Wharf Light Station - The only original structure remaining on the wharf, this small lighthouse stands 20 feet tall. Dating back to 1871, it has guided navigation in Salem Harbor ever since. A roundtrip walk to the lighthouse takes at least 20 minutes.
- Waite Street & Pierce Avenue - Once a warehouse for the wharf, this building now houses a national park gift shop. Visitors can admire it from the outside or enter to shop for souvenirs or park information.
