Salem Old Town Hall - During Salem’s great maritime era, Old Town Hall was the center of public life. Merchants gathered here to discuss fortunes made across the oceans. Politicians argued beneath its high ceilings. Public meetings, court proceedings, and heated disputes filled the hall. In a town already shaped by fear, accusation, and tragedy from the infamous 1692 witch trials, Salem carried a reputation for shadows lingering beneath the surface of everyday life.
Visitors on ghost tours often pause outside the building because of the strange atmosphere surrounding Derby Square after dark. Guides tell stories of Salem’s long history of death at sea, financial ruin, old feuds, and the lingering tension of a city forever connected to the supernatural in the public imagination. Though the witch trials themselves happened more than a century before Old Town Hall was built, Salem’s obsession with guilt, judgment, and public spectacle still seems to echo through places like this. - Gardner Pingree House - This house is remembered for more than architecture alone. In 1830, it became the site of one of New England’s most sensational crimes: the murder of wealthy sea captain Joseph White. The shocking case drew national attention and featured a prosecution led by Daniel Webster. The trial and murder later influenced writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, adding a darker literary layer to the home’s history.
- Bewitched Statue of Elizabeth Montgomery - Samantha, from the famous TV show Bewitched that has a tremendous impact on our lovely town.
- John Ward House - One of the most haunted hotels in America!
- Salem Witch Trials Memorial - At the edge of Salem Common stands the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, a quiet but haunting reminder of one of the darkest chapters in American history. Dedicated in 1992, exactly 300 years after the Salem witch trials, the memorial honors the 20 innocent people executed during the hysteria of 1692. Granite benches project outward from a low stone wall, each carved with a victim’s name, method of execution, and final words. Visitors often notice how silent the space feels compared to the busy streets nearby — a place designed not just to remember the dead, but to reflect on fear, accusation, and the dangers of mass panic.
