- Taqah Castle - The journey begins at Taqah Castle, with a scenic drive through the charming fishing town of Taqah, known for its ‘Dried Sardines’, diverse agricultural produce, and traditional Dhofari Mud Houses. The castle, once the official residence of the ‘Wali’ (Governor), now serves as a museum showcasing the rich history and ancient lifestyle of the locals. Visitors can also view the nearby watchtower (old Fort) on the hill beside the castle.
- Tourist Attraction Viewing Platform - Next, enjoy the stunning rocky cliff at the end of Taqah’s coastline. Standing 15 meters high, it offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and Taqah city. Feel the refreshing ocean breeze, relax, and capture memorable photos. There’s also a good chance of spotting dolphins below the cliff. A truly superb location.
- Wadi Darbat - The next destination is Wadi Darbat, a renowned and picturesque natural spot in the region. It’s one of the top two tourist attractions in Dhofar, perfect for a memorable day with family. The valley features a spring-fed lake and offers seasonal water activities like pedal kayaking and speedboats, especially after the monsoon. The area boasts a rich ecosystem, beautiful waterfalls, and a pleasant climate, ideal for relaxation. Visitors can often see local herds of camels, cows, and goats.
- Tawi Attair Sinkhole - A 20-minute drive from Darbat Valley leads to the Tawi Attair sinkhole, known locally as the “well of birds.” This impressive limestone karst formation is 211 meters deep, akin to a 60-story building. The guide will provide insights and take visitors to a viewpoint where they can observe numerous birds nesting in the limestone walls. It’s a natural wonder.
- Baobab Trees | أشجار التبلدي - Located in the heart of Wadi Hinnah at Samhan Mountain, the next stop is to see the unique giant Tabaldi Baobab Trees, scientifically known as Adansonia digitata. These rare trees, locally called Ankiji or Al Mashwa, can grow up to 25 meters tall with a diameter of up to 2 meters. While commonly found in Africa, particularly Madagascar, about 200 Baobab trees are in Dhofar. Capture memorable photos and experience this rare habitat.
- Earth Gravity Controversy - A 15-minute drive down Samhan Mountain leads to the intriguing gravity point. Experience a natural phenomenon where a stretch of road defies gravity, making cars appear to move uphill in neutral gear. It’s a fascinating experience.
- Sumhuram Old City - The final stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sumhuram, where visitors can explore the preserved ruins of the ancient city atop a small hill overlooking the Indian Ocean. The site tells a 5th-century BC story of human settlement and its significance as a port for the Dhofari frankincense trade. An information center offers a 6-minute video about the city’s history and ruins.
