The goal was to secure and protect the right flank (from the ocean perspective) of the landing beaches, allowing the 4th and 90th Infantry Divisions to advance from UTAH beach and cut off the Cotentin Peninsula on their way to the deep-sea port of Cherbourg.
Visit the church where paratrooper John Steele famously got caught on the steeple, as depicted in the movie “The Longest Day!”
Statue of Brigadier General “Teddy” Roosevelt Jr.
- Utah Beach - The smaller of the two American landing beaches, yet crucial for capturing the deep-sea harbor of Cherbourg to facilitate supply deliveries.
Regarded as the most successful with the fewest casualties among all Normandy landing beaches.
This is where General Teddy Roosevelt landed, becoming the first seaborne general to set foot on Normandy soil.
We visit the beach and discuss the challenges faced by Allied soldiers on June 6th, 1944.
- Sainte-Marie-du-Mont - The first village liberated by the 101st Airborne Division, securing the exit roads from UTAH beach. Visit the French resistance monument and tour the beautiful church, where elements of the 101st AB Division eliminated a German sniper hidden in the steeple.
- D-Day Experience (Dead Man’s Corner museum) - The crossroads that the 101st AB paratroopers needed to capture before reaching Carentan.
The name DMC refers to a small Allied tank destroyed by German paratroopers, who were well entrenched around the building that now houses an intriguing museum.
The tank commander was killed while trying to escape, and his body remained over the turret for days before it could be recovered.
- Carentan - Situated between UTAH Beach and OMAHA Beach, Carentan was crucial for linking the two American landing beaches. The battle for Carentan lasted from June 10th to June 15th. After five days of intense fighting, the 101st Airborne Paratroopers were relieved by elements of the 2nd Armored Division and the 29th Infantry Division, both arriving from the bloody OMAHA.
- Pointe du Hoc - Atop 100-foot-high cliffs, the Germans had built one of their largest long-range gun batteries. Follow the path of the American Rangers, led by Col. James Rudder, who were tasked with destroying the guns.
- Omaha Beach - The most perilous location on June 6th! Visit the section of the beach featured in the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.
During and after the visit, learn about the units involved, understand what went wrong, and see the contrasts with UTAH beach.
Gain even more respect for the troops after witnessing how initiative, determination, and leadership led to success.
- Cimetiere Americain de Colleville-sur-Mer - “All gave some, some gave all ……. !”
The cemetery spans over 170 acres overlooking OMAHA beach.
More than 9,300 men and women are buried here, with over 1,500 names engraved on the wall of the missing.
Typically our last stop on the tour, offering a chance to pay respects.
- WN 60 - The best vantage point over Omaha beach. Discover how this German strongpoint became the first bunker complex captured by the Allies. Explore the original trenches and climb the machine gun and mortar positions.
