Origin: Located in St. Michael’s Chapel in the historic center of the World Heritage city, the Bone House has existed since the 12th century.
Skull Collection: The Bone House contains around 1200 human skulls, with 610 hand-painted and arranged by family groups, each marked with dates of death. This tradition began in 1720 AD when graves were reopened due to limited burial space, leading to the removal and decoration of skulls.
Continuation of Tradition: The Bone House custom continues today, with the most recent addition in 1995 being the skull of a woman who died in 1983. Individuals can choose to have their skulls placed in the Bone House. - Hallstatt Lutheran Church - The Hallstatt Lutheran Church, located in Hallstatt, Austria, is a prominent landmark by the Hallstätter See, enhancing the village’s beauty and serving as a popular photo spot.
