• Dendera Temple Complex - Departure from Safaga Port is scheduled for 6:00 am, with a 2-hour drive to explore the temple dedicated to Goddess Hathor, the deity of love and music.

Arrival at Dendera is expected by 9:00 am, where an Egyptologist tour guide will provide insights into the temple’s history.

Dendera Temple

The Temple of Hathor was primarily built during the Late Ptolemaic period, notably under the reign of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra VII. Additional structures were added during the Roman era. Despite being constructed by a dynasty of non-native Egyptian rulers, the temple’s design aligns with traditional Egyptian temples, except for the front of the hypostyle hall, which, as per an inscription above the entrance, was built by Emperor Tiberius.

Additionally, the temple complex features scenes depicting Ptolemaic rulers. For instance, a large relief on the exterior of one temple wall shows Cleopatra VII and her son with Julius Caesar, co-ruler Ptolemy XV (also known as Caesarion). The Ptolemaic rulers are depicted in Egyptian attire, making offerings.

Hathor was also revered as a goddess of healing, as evidenced by the presence of a sanatorium within the temple complex. Pilgrims visited to seek healing from the goddess. Sacred water, sanctified by pouring over statues with sacred texts, was used for bathing, priests of Hathor dispensed unguents, and sleeping quarters were available for those hoping the goddess would appear in their dreams to aid them.
