Fun and Educational Trip to a Reindeer Farm - This was my first out of two tours with Lapland Welcome in Rovaniemi over the first weekend of March 2019. I stayed in Arctic City Hotel, which was literally a 1 minute walk from the Lapland Welcome office. Our guide (Kseniia, pronounced "Senya") picked us up right on time from the hotel reception area and brought us to the Lapland Welcome office to get equipped in a warm onesie and warm boots. It was just two of us booked on that tour for the 2PM tour (they have a 10AM and 2PM package), so getting dressed and getting going was pretty quick compared to the other reviews that I've read. I think we were pretty lucky that it was just the two of us. I felt like I was essentially getting a private tour with the guide that afternoon. The first part of the tour was getting into the Lapland Welcome vehicle (which was a van for this trip) and looking for wild reindeer from the vehicle on our way to the reindeer farm (SieriPoro Safaris, "poro" means reindeer in Finnish). We didn't happen to see any wild reindeer, which was totally fine with me as we have no control over wild animals and where they feel like being at certain times. It was a nice, scenic ride nonetheless with good conversation. Then we arrived at SieriPoro Safaris, where a woman who worked at SieriPoro named Krista (spelling?) lead the tour. We saw the "kindergarten" area where there were reindeer that were less than 1 year old (baby reindeer are born every May so they were close to being 1 in March), and the reindeer-in-training, the female reindeer, and-- as the trip title suggests-- a short reindeer sleigh ride (one lap around the fenced in sleigh track) with one of the experienced/trained reindeer who are used to people. After being outside learning about the various reindeer and the short sleigh ride, we went into a nice and traditional cabin where we had coffee, cookies, and learned more about the activities and traditions of the reindeer farm. I rate this tour 5 out of 5 because our Lapland Welcome guide was very nice, relatable, and enthusiastic, and also the guide at SieriPoro was very nice and informative. The experience was nice as it was just the two of us tourists and not a huge group. And I've read reviews on this tour before deciding to go on it, and I think it managed my expectations. I came into the experience expecting something more short, sweet and educational rather than some sort of extravagant sleigh ride adventure in the forest. If you're interested in visiting a reindeer farm and being educated on reindeer traditions and going for one lap around a track, then this tour is for you.
