• Mount Gahinga - At 5:00 am, guests will be picked up from their hotel in Kigali and driven for 3 hours to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and a briefing about the hike and what to anticipate.

Participants will be accompanied by park rangers and guides as they embark on a hike through bamboo forests, offering the chance to see mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, elephants, and bushbucks, along with various bird species. Additionally, hikers can enjoy the stunning views of other Virunga Volcanoes from afar, which may inspire a desire to explore them as well.

The hike up Mount Gahinga takes 6-8 hours, with the ascent offering a breathtaking view of the peak. Upon reaching the swamp-dominated summit, guests can take photos, enjoy their packed lunch or snacks, and rest before preparing to descend back to the base of the mountain.

Afterward, the descent down the volcano via ladders leads back to the park headquarters, followed by a drive back to Kigali or to a lodge.

Embarking on a hike up Mount Gahinga reveals stunning features like the Volcanic Caves and a caldera at its summit. As the smallest and lowest of the eight Virunga Volcanoes, Mount Gahinga rises to 3,474 meters (11,464 feet) above sea level, straddling the borders of Uganda and Rwanda.

In the local Kinyarwanda language, “Gahinga” translates to “Pile of stones.”

The hiking trail leads adventurers through a bamboo forest, home to a diverse array of wildlife, including mountain gorillas, Black-fronted duikers, golden monkeys, and bushbucks. At the volcano’s peak, a picturesque swamp awaits, featuring unique flora and breathtaking views.
