- Kijk-Kubus - In the 1970s, architects aimed to create welcoming residential areas with the involvement of residents and other users. This was a response to the large-scale and monotonous modernism of post-WWII reconstruction architecture.
- Luchtsingel - In 2011, the Rotterdam municipality launched the first city initiative, an administrative tool to encourage innovation and citizen participation. Residents were invited to propose projects to enliven the city and enhance its quality of life. A budget of 4 million was allocated from the city initiative for project implementation.
- Rotterdam Tourist Information Coolsingel - A visit to the tourist information center offers more insights about the city and a warm welcome from the mayor. Your TourGuy will guide you through the exhibition.
- Stationsplein 2 - Before WWII, there was no Central Station, but four stations surrounded the center. In 1957, the Central Station opened at its current site. A complete renovation began in 2004, and the current version was completed in 2014, as the old station couldn’t handle the passenger volume.
- Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk - The Laurenskerk is the sole remnant of Rotterdam’s medieval center. It is a blend of a hall church (all buildings of equal height) and a cruciform basilica (where side towers are lower than the main tower). The church was constructed between 1449 and 1525.
- Markthal - The interior façade of the Markthal features an 11,000 m² artwork by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, titled Hoorn des Overvloeds. This title refers to the Cornucopia, a Greek mythological horn symbolizing abundance. The artwork displays enlarged fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, flowers, and insects, with the Laurenskerk and its tower visible in the background.
- Nieuwe Delftse Poort - In the Middle Ages, this was one of Rotterdam’s 10 city gates. In the 1930s, as Rotterdam expanded, the gate obstructed traffic flow, leading to its relocation by about 100 meters (demolition faced significant opposition). During WWII, the gate was heavily damaged, and a year later, it was demolished as it couldn’t be restored. Some decorative elements were preserved and integrated into the walls of buildings at the town hall square corner.
- Old Harbour - Although much of the historic center was destroyed during WWII, the Oude Haven is one of the preserved historic sites. The harbor features charming old boats, and the quays are lined with a vibrant mix of buildings.
- Witte Huis - Built in 1889, the White House, at 43 meters tall, was the first skyscraper in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
- Meent - Today, the Meent is a popular spot in Rotterdam, featuring numerous cafés, eateries, and clothing shops. It’s also a place where people enjoy seeing and being seen.
