- Te Puia - Rotorua is a remarkable area where geothermal activity is visible through the steam rising from the hills, parks, and lakefront. Upon arrival at Te Puia, accompanied by a local guide, you will witness bubbling mud, pools of boiling water, and magnificent geysers. The Pōhutu geyser is the highlight of the visit. Pōhutu is the largest geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, erupting once or twice every hour and reaching heights of up to 30 meters (100 ft). At Te Puia, you will also have the opportunity to see New Zealand’s national iconic flightless bird, the Kiwi. Discover the unique ways the Māori adapted to life in Rotorua.
- Lake Rotorua - The tour continues with a visit to the lakefront, the historical and picturesque government gardens, and the hot pools (currently under maintenance).
The journey through Rotorua beautifully combines the intriguing geology, rich culture, and colonial history of this region, making it a ‘must-visit’ destination.
- Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Waitomo Caves
The tour proceeds to Waitomo Valley, the entrance to the stunning Waitomo Caves.
Waitomo was one of New Zealand’s first tourist destinations. Its enduring popularity is understandable, and you’ll soon see why. Lonely Planet describes the Waitomo Caves as a ‘must-do attraction’.
Beneath the farmland of the Waitomo area lies a network of caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers. These caves were formed by underground streams that shaped the soft limestone over thousands of years. Many caves feature incredible stalactites (icicle-shaped formations hanging from the ceiling) and stalagmites (upward-growing mounds of deposits) that have developed over centuries from minerals in the water trickling through the caves. However, what truly sets these caves apart are the glow worms, Arachnocampa Luminosa, which are unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these creatures line the cave walls, emitting their distinctive luminescent light, creating the sensation of being surrounded by a million stars.
During the tour, a local expert guide offers captivating insights into the history and geology of the Waitomo Caves as you explore them on foot and by boat. The gentle boat ride takes you silently along a tranquil underground stream, illuminated only by the millions of tiny glow-worms adorning the cave walls and ceiling. It is truly an awe-inspiring experience.
