The National Kiwi Hatchery leads the nation in kiwi care, egg incubation, hatching methods, and chick rearing. By participating in one of their experiences, visitors can witness the incubation of kiwi eggs, the hatching process, and the emergence of newly hatched kiwi chicks.
The hatching season runs from September to March, offering the best opportunity to see kiwi eggs and chicks. During other months, visitors can observe resident adult kiwi foraging in the Nocturnal House.
All ticket proceeds directly support the kiwi hatching program.
The National Kiwi Hatchery is situated at the Agrodome in Rotorua.

On a guided tour, visitors will discover New Zealand’s esteemed kiwi conservation initiative, which has successfully hatched over 2,600 kiwi chicks. Explore the interactive kiwi burrow, learn about egg incubation and hatching techniques, and observe kiwis as they roam and forage in the Nocturnal House.
This educational and thought-provoking experience offers a unique opportunity to witness the efforts in aiding kiwi at the largest and most successful kiwi hatchery globally.
As a non-profit organization, all ticket proceeds directly support the kiwi hatching program.
- Children must be minimum 5 years old to participate
- Check-in 15 minutes prior to the tour departure time
- Hatching season is September to March, which is the best chance to see Kiwi chicks or eggs. Outside of these dates, you may not see a Kiwi chick or egg, but still see live Kiwi in the nocturnal house
- The facility is located onsite at the Agrodome Farm, Rotorua
- Children under 5 years of age are unable to take part in this experience
