Glad we went. A informative tour and lots to see. - We arrived with my husband having memories (45years ago) of spouting geysers, terraces and lots of geothermal activity. Spouting geysers and terraces were nit here(maybe the wrong location), but we had a fabulous time. From the moment we arrived Liam(at counter) was friendly and had a laugh with my husband over all the things that weren't going to be part of this experience🤣. He and another guide Kia then took us on a 1hr tour of the park. Liam was fun, gave lots of history of the region and also how the Maori people connect with the land of this area. Thank you Liam and Kia.

Best of the best - Fun and informative walk amongst the boiling volcanic pools with Liam. His narrative was complete with history of the area, flora and fauna used be Maori peoples, jokes and insights we have not heard on other walks.

Great Outing to the Hell's Gate - The Hell's Gate is worth a visit. Interesting, with all the different mud pools, the bush walk, the medicine lake, etc., all very well explained by the guide. We also enjoyed the Maori carving we experienced at the end of the walk.

A must do when in Rotorua - We booked thru Trip Advisor, don’t, we ended up paying more than if we’d paid at the venue. The staff at Hell’s Gate were great, super helpful & friendly. We skipped the free guided tour and walked the area by ourselves, much better as we could see everything at our own pace, take pictures without a crowd and not listen to a whole lot of chatter and silly questions. The carving experience was great fun and our instructor was very friendly and helpful.

A place of contrasts - This really was an excellent place to visit. We did not partake in the ‘muddy events’ but we found the free guided walk both informative and light hearted. ‘T’, our guide, was so knowledgeable and able to hold his audience with facts and anecdotes about the area and its people.

Do the guided tour - I had visited Te Puia when last visited NZ. This time, I had picked Wai-O-Tapu but decided not to drive half way back to Taupo and there were reviews about how their geyser was activated with soap. So instead we went to Hell’s Gate for the guided Geothermal Walk. We arrived at opening time 10am and already there was a queue. But only because the staff take their time with each customer - only took 10 minutes to get in. There’s a little cafe and souvenir shop while you wait for the 10.30am tour. Guide with the long name, Ngati, was fantastic. The tour was advertised as 1.5 hours, but ours took 2 hours. We loved every minute of it. Ngati makes the place come alive and how it integrates with Māori life. You don’t need to see a geyser to tick it off your list. Don’t rush around in half the time on a self-guided tour - you’d miss all the little things that Ngati explained - from the bubbling and steaming earth and mud pools, to the plants and birds. The bush walk was a serene interlude and Medicine Lake magical. You can do some wood carving afterwards or add on the mud pool experience. We left very happy with our visit to Hell’s Gate.

Visit from down under - It was a great and unique experience overall. The staff were lovely and accomodating. A bit of a shame that some of the areas were closed due to the rain

Good experience but unfortunately without a real guide - It was a really nice experience, very interesting. Just a bit disapointed because we were expecting a Maori guide but we just had a paper guide even if it was enough to discover this area. The real guided tour is only at some precise schedule and we missed this information so be carefull.
