Mercati di Traiano - Museo dei Fori Imperiali - Embark on a special guided tour of Trajan’s Market in Rome, one of Italy’s most captivating archaeological sites. Excavated between 1924 and 1936, its restoration stands as a remarkable achievement in Italy’s historic preservation. Constructed by the ambitious general Marcus Ulpius Traianus (53-117 AD), these markets serve as a lasting testament to a great Roman leader. This fascinating tour explores the most significant commercial and administrative hub of ancient times, with Trajan’s Markets remaining almost intact.
The Trajan’s Markets are situated along Via dei Fori Imperiali and represent a unique example among ancient world remnants, as it was a vast commercial center spanning six floors.
The Markets of Trajan are an archaeological complex with unparalleled characteristics in Rome. The monument has witnessed the city’s evolution from the Imperial Age to the present day: serving as a strategic administrative center of the Imperial Forum, an aristocratic residence, a military fortress, a prestigious convent, and barracks.
The complex, constructed of red brick and concrete, originally had six levels housing up to 150 different shops and apartments. Today, Trajan’s Market hosts the Museum of the Imperial Forums, of which the Markets of Trajan were an integral part.
The extensive Roman brick complex, known as Trajan’s Market, has miraculously survived from the heart of the ancient city, closely linked with the large squares of the Imperial Forums, and remains central in the modern city.
Today, visitors can stroll along the main shopping street, Via Biberatica, or through one of the complex’s corridors, exploring rooms that once housed the tabernae. During the guided tour, visitors can access the high terraces of the complex, offering a breathtaking view of the underlying area of the Fori Imperiali, one of the most extraordinary vistas of the eternal city. The guide will also provide insights into the entire Fori area from this unique perspective.
- Via dei Fori Imperiali - Begin your journey through Ancient Rome with a delightful walk across the Imperial Fora. This series of monumental fora (public squares) was constructed in Rome over approximately one and a half centuries and formed the heart of the late Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. This external visit allows you to discover the main ruins showcasing Rome’s grandeur from the early Republic’s disruption to the Imperial Age.
- Colonna Traiana - Erected in 113 AD to commemorate Emperor Trajan’s achievements in Dacia, the Trajan Column was the first cochlid column, featuring decorations spiraling along the shaft.
The Column, designed by architect Apollodorus of Damascus at Trajan’s behest, stands nearly 40 meters tall, including the base, marking the original height of the Quirinal saddle, which was cut to create Trajan’s Forum. The column is the only monument from the forum that remains almost intact.
Trajan’s Column consists of 17 colossal cylindrical monolithic rocks, with a diameter of nearly 4 meters. These wrap the column in 23 turns of exquisite reliefs: nearly 200 meters of precious white marble that unfolds like a film. This film narrates Trajan’s victorious military campaigns against the Dacians to secure the Empire’s borders along the Danube. Inside, a spiral staircase of 185 steps leads to the top.
